Model: K-1004-12

Residential Trouble-Shooter DPD

Introduction

The Taylor Technologies K-1004-12 Residential Trouble-Shooter DPD Test Kit is designed for comprehensive testing of pool and spa water. This kit allows you to accurately measure key parameters such as Free Chlorine, Combined Chlorine, Total Chlorine, Total Bromine, pH, Acid Demand, Total Alkalinity, and Total Hardness, ensuring optimal water balance and sanitation.

Regular testing and adjustment of water chemistry are essential for maintaining a safe, clean, and comfortable swimming environment, as well as protecting pool and spa equipment from corrosion or scaling.

Kit Contents

Your Taylor Technologies K-1004-12 kit should contain the following components:

  • Test block with color comparators
  • Sample tubes
  • Reagent solutions (e.g., DPD reagents, pH indicator, alkalinity reagent, hardness reagents)
  • Instruction manual (this document)

The blue plastic case is open, revealing various reagent bottles (blue, yellow, red caps), a clear plastic sample tube with measurement markings, and a white and red color comparator block. The inside lid of the case displays printed instructions for different water tests. The image highlights the complete kit contents ready for use.

Setup

  1. Read Instructions: Familiarize yourself with all instructions and safety precautions before beginning any tests.
  2. Gather Supplies: Ensure you have the test kit, a clean water sample, and a pen/paper to record results.
  3. Sample Collection: Collect water samples from at least 18 inches below the surface of the pool or spa, away from return jets. Rinse sample tubes several times with the water to be tested before filling.
  4. Storage: Store the test kit in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
  5. Reagent Expiration: Replace reagents once each year, or sooner if they appear discolored or if test results become inconsistent.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps carefully for accurate test results. Always rinse tubes before and after each test.

1. Free, Combined, Total / Total Bromine Test

  • Rinse and fill one 10 mL sample tube to the 9.5 mL mark with water to be tested.
  • Add 5 drops R-0001 DPD Reagent.
  • Add 5 drops R-0002 DPD Reagent. Cap and invert to mix.
  • Match color with color standard. Record as parts per million (ppm) free chlorine.
  • For combined chlorine, add 5 drops R-0003. Cap and invert to mix. Match color with color standard. Record as ppm combined chlorine.
  • For total chlorine, add 5 drops R-0003. Cap and invert to mix. Match color with color standard. Record as ppm total chlorine.
  • For total bromine, multiply total chlorine result by 2.25.

2. pH Test

  • Rinse and fill one 10 mL sample tube to the 9.5 mL mark with water to be tested.
  • Add 5 drops R-0004 pH Indicator. Cap and invert to mix.
  • Match color with color standard. Record pH units.

3. Acid Demand Test

  • Use treated sample from pH test.
  • Add R-0005 Acid Demand Reagent dropwise, counting drops, until desired pH is matched. See dosage charts to continue.

4. Total Alkalinity Test

  • Rinse and fill one 25 mL sample tube to the 25 mL mark with water to be tested.
  • Add 2 drops R-0007 Total Alkalinity Indicator. Swirl to mix.
  • Add R-0008 Total Alkalinity Reagent dropwise, counting drops, until color changes from blue to red.
  • Multiply drops by 10 to obtain total alkalinity in ppm.

5. Total Hardness Test

  • Rinse and fill one 25 mL sample tube to the 25 mL mark with water to be tested.
  • Add 2 drops R-0010 Hardness Indicator. Swirl to mix.
  • Add R-0011 Hardness Reagent dropwise, counting drops, until color changes from red to blue.
  • Multiply drops by 10 to obtain total hardness in ppm.

Maintenance

  • Cleanliness: Always rinse sample tubes and test cells thoroughly with clean water immediately after each use. This prevents contamination and ensures accurate future readings.
  • Storage: Store the kit in its original case in a cool, dark, and dry place. Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight, which can degrade reagents.
  • Reagent Care: Keep reagent bottle caps tightly closed when not in use to prevent evaporation or contamination. Do not interchange caps between different reagent bottles.
  • Expiration: Reagents have a limited shelf life. Replace them annually or as indicated on the bottle labels, even if they appear full. Expired reagents can lead to inaccurate results.

Troubleshooting

  • Inaccurate Readings:
    • Ensure reagents are not expired.
    • Verify sample tubes are clean and free of residue.
    • Confirm correct number of drops for each reagent.
    • Ensure water sample is taken from appropriate depth and location.
  • Color Does Not Match:
    • Check if the water sample is too hot or too cold; ideal temperature is 70-80°F (21-27°C).
    • Ensure proper mixing of reagents with the sample.
    • Some tests require immediate reading after mixing.
  • Cloudy Sample:
    • This may indicate high levels of suspended solids or algae. Filter the sample if necessary, but note that this may affect certain test results.
