Setup Guide

Hardware Installation

  1. Install Hard Drives:

The DNS-321-1TB supports up to two 3.5-inch SATA hard drives. If your device did not come with a pre-installed hard drive or you wish to add a second one, gently slide the hard drive(s) into the bays until they click into place. No tools or cables are required for this step.

  2. Connect to Network:

Connect one end of the provided Ethernet cable to the Gigabit Ethernet port on the back of the ShareCenter and the other end to an available LAN port on your router or network switch.

  3. Connect Power:

Connect the power adapter to the DC-in port on the ShareCenter and then plug the adapter into a power outlet. The device will power on automatically.

Software Configuration

Once the hardware is connected, use the Resource CD or download the latest utility from the D-Link support website to configure your ShareCenter. The utility will help you discover the device on your network, set up RAID configurations (if using two drives), create user accounts, and configure network shares.

  • Run the D-Link ShareCenter Setup Wizard.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to assign an IP address, set up administrator password, and configure disk modes (Standard, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1).
  • Create shared folders and user accounts with appropriate access permissions.

Operating Instructions

Accessing Your ShareCenter

  • Local Network Access:

From a computer on the same network, you can access shared folders by navigating to Network Locations or by typing the ShareCenter's IP address or hostname in your file explorer (e.g., \\DNS-321-1TB or \\192.168.1.X).

  • Remote Access (Internet):

Configure port forwarding on your router for FTP or HTTP/HTTPS access to the ShareCenter. Use the D-Link management program to enable remote access features. You will need your public IP address or a Dynamic DNS (DDNS) service to connect from outside your local network.

Using Built-in Servers

  • UPnP AV Media Server:

Enable the UPnP AV server in the ShareCenter's web interface. This allows compatible media players (e.g., smart TVs, game consoles) on your network to stream media files directly from the ShareCenter.

  • FTP Server:

Activate the FTP server to allow file transfers using an FTP client. This is useful for remote access and large file transfers.

  • BitTorrent Client:

The integrated BitTorrent client allows you to download files directly to your ShareCenter without needing a computer to be constantly on. Configure download paths and manage torrents via the web interface.

Maintenance

  • Regular Backups:

Even with RAID 1, it is recommended to perform regular backups of critical data to an external drive or cloud service.

  • Firmware Updates:

Periodically check the D-Link support website for firmware updates. Updating the firmware can improve performance, add new features, and fix bugs.

  • Disk Health Check:

Monitor the health of your hard drives through the ShareCenter's web interface. Replace drives showing signs of failure promptly.

  • Cleaning:

Keep the device clean and free from dust to ensure proper airflow and prevent overheating. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions

  • Device Not Detected on Network:

Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the ShareCenter and your router. Verify that the network lights on the device are active. Try restarting your router and the ShareCenter. Use the D-Link ShareCenter Setup Wizard to scan for the device.

  • Cannot Access Shared Folders:

Check user permissions for the shared folders. Ensure the ShareCenter has a valid IP address and is accessible from your computer. Verify that network discovery is enabled on your computer.

  • Slow Performance:

Check network congestion. Ensure your network cables are Gigabit compatible. Verify hard drive health. Consider upgrading firmware.

  • Hard Drive Failure Indication:

If a drive fails in a RAID 1 configuration, the device will continue to operate using the mirrored drive. Replace the failed drive as soon as possible. Refer to the full manual for drive replacement procedures.
