2. Product Overview

The JVC HR-J 580 MS is a VHS videorecorder designed for recording and playback of VHS tapes. It features SQPB (Super Quasi Playback) for improved picture quality with S-VHS tapes, T-V Link for integrated TV control, and B.E.S.T. Picture System for enhanced video output. The unit also includes A2/NICAM digital stereo audio and an Auto Tune function for channel setup.

3.1 Connecting to a Television

  1. Power Off: Ensure both the videorecorder and your television are powered off before making any connections.
  2. Antenna Connection: Connect your TV antenna or cable TV signal to the "ANT IN" (or similar) input on the videorecorder.
  3. TV Connection: Connect the "TV OUT" (or similar) output on the videorecorder to the antenna input on your television. Use an RF coaxial cable for this connection.
  4. Audio/Video (Optional): For improved picture and sound quality, connect the videorecorder's "VIDEO OUT" and "AUDIO OUT" (L/R) jacks to the corresponding "VIDEO IN" and "AUDIO IN" jacks on your television using RCA cables.
  5. Power Connection: Plug the videorecorder's power cord into an AC outlet.

3.2 Initial Channel Tuning (AUTO TUNE)

  1. Power On: Turn on the videorecorder and your television.
  2. Select VCR Input: Set your television to the correct input channel (e.g., AV1, Line 1, or the channel where the VCR signal is received, usually channel 3 or 4 if using RF).
  3. Start Auto Tune: Press the AUTO TUNE button on the front panel or remote control. The videorecorder will begin scanning for available channels.
  4. Completion: Once tuning is complete, the videorecorder will store the found channels. You can then use the PR + / - buttons to cycle through them.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Playing a VHS Tape

  1. Insert Tape: Gently insert a VHS tape into the tape slot with the label facing up. The videorecorder will automatically load the tape.
  2. Start Playback: Press the PLAY (▶) button. The video will begin playing on your television.
  3. Pause/Stop: Use the PAUSE (⏸) button to temporarily stop playback or the STOP (■) button to end playback.
  4. Fast Forward/Rewind: Use the FAST FORWARD (⏩) or REWIND (⏪) buttons to navigate through the tape.
  5. Eject Tape: Press the EJECT (⏏) button to remove the tape from the unit.

4.2 Recording a Program

  1. Insert Recordable Tape: Insert a blank or recordable VHS tape into the tape slot. Ensure the erase-protection tab on the tape is intact.
  2. Select Channel: Use the PR + / - buttons to select the channel you wish to record.
  3. Select Recording Mode: Press the SP/LP button to choose between Standard Play (SP) for higher quality and shorter recording time, or Long Play (LP) for lower quality and longer recording time.
  4. Start Recording: Press the RECORD (●) button. The recording indicator will illuminate, and recording will begin.
  5. Stop Recording: Press the STOP (■) button to end the recording.

4.3 Using SQPB (Super Quasi Playback)

The SQPB feature allows the JVC HR-J 580 MS to play back S-VHS recorded tapes with improved picture quality compared to standard VHS VCRs. Simply insert an S-VHS recorded tape, and the unit will automatically engage SQPB mode if the tape is compatible. Note that this unit cannot record in S-VHS format.

Over time, tape heads can accumulate dirt, leading to poor picture or sound quality. If you experience these issues, use a commercially available dry-type VHS head cleaning cassette. Follow the instructions provided with the cleaning cassette carefully. Avoid excessive use of cleaning cassettes, as they can cause wear on the tape heads.

5.3 Storage

Store the videorecorder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. When not in use for extended periods, disconnect the power cord.
