Amprobe TIC 300 PRO High Voltage Detector

Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The Amprobe TIC 300 PRO is a non-contact high voltage detector designed for electrical professionals. It provides reliable detection of AC voltage from 30 VAC up to 122,000 VAC (122kV) without direct contact, enhancing safety during electrical work. This device is MSHA certified and intrinsically safe, making it suitable for various demanding environments. This manual outlines the proper procedures for setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure safe and effective use of your detector.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Always prioritize safety when working with electricity. Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in serious injury or death.

  • Read and understand this entire manual before using the detector.
  • Do not use the detector if it appears damaged or is not operating correctly.
  • Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working near energized circuits.
  • Verify the detector's functionality using the self-test feature before and after each use.
  • The detector indicates the presence of voltage; it does not measure voltage levels precisely. Always confirm de-energization with a secondary method if required.
  • This device is designed for AC voltage detection only.
  • Do not attempt to repair or modify the detector. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.

3. Product Features

  • Voltage Sensing Tip: The red conical end that detects AC voltage.
  • LED Indicators: Visual alerts for voltage presence.
  • Audible Buzzer: Sound alert for voltage presence.
  • ON/OFF Button: Powers the unit on and off.
  • TEST Button: Initiates the self-test function.
  • LOW/HIGH Range Buttons: Selects the appropriate voltage detection range (30-1500 VAC or 1500-122kV).
  • Handle: Ergonomic grip for safe handling.
  • Hot Stick Adapter: Located at the base of the handle for attachment to an insulated hot stick for high voltage applications.

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Ensure the detector is powered off.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover, typically at the base of the handle.
  3. Unscrew or unlatch the cover and remove it.
  4. Insert one 9V alkaline battery, observing correct polarity (+/-).
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it.

The detector requires one 9V battery for operation, which is included with the product.

5.2 Attaching to a Hot Stick (for High Voltage Applications)

For detecting high voltages (1500 VAC to 122kV), the TIC 300 PRO should be securely attached to an appropriate insulated hot stick.

  1. Ensure the hot stick is clean, dry, and rated for the voltage levels being tested.
  2. Align the hot stick adapter at the base of the detector's handle with the universal spline adapter on the hot stick.
  3. Securely attach the detector to the hot stick according to the hot stick manufacturer's instructions. Ensure a firm connection to prevent accidental detachment during use.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Powering On and Self-Test

  1. Press the ON/OFF button to power on the detector.
  2. Immediately after powering on, press the TEST button. The detector should emit an audible beep and the LED indicators should flash, confirming proper operation. If this does not occur, replace the battery or do not use the device.
  3. Perform the self-test before and after each use to ensure reliability.

6.2 Selecting Voltage Range

  • Press the LOW button for detecting voltages between 30 VAC and 1500 VAC. This range is suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial panels, outlets, and wiring.
  • Press the HIGH button for detecting voltages between 1500 VAC and 122kV. This range is used for transmission lines, power distribution equipment, and other high voltage applications.
  • Always select the appropriate range for the expected voltage.

6.3 Detecting AC Voltage

  1. After powering on and performing the self-test, select the appropriate voltage range (LOW or HIGH).
  2. Carefully approach the conductor or equipment to be tested with the voltage sensing tip.
  3. Position the tip near the conductor. If AC voltage is present, the detector will emit an audible beep and the LED indicators will flash. The intensity of the indication may vary with voltage strength and proximity.
  4. Maintain a safe distance from energized parts. The non-contact design allows for detection without physical contact.

6.4 Powering Off

Press and hold the ON/OFF button until the detector powers off. It is recommended to power off the device when not in use to conserve battery life.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the detector with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the device is completely dry before storage or next use.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears or if the self-test fails. Always use a fresh alkaline battery.
  • Storage: Store the detector in its protective carrying case in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the detector for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the casing or frayed wiring. Do not use a damaged device.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Detector does not power on.Dead or improperly installed battery.Replace the 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
Self-test fails (no beep/LED flash).Low battery or internal fault.Replace battery. If issue persists, discontinue use and contact support.
No indication when near known live circuit.Incorrect voltage range selected, detector too far from source, or internal fault.Ensure correct LOW/HIGH range is selected. Move closer to the conductor. Perform self-test. If issue persists, discontinue use.
Intermittent or weak indication.Low battery, environmental interference, or weak field.Replace battery. Be aware of environmental factors (e.g., humidity, static). Ensure proper proximity.
