Korg microPiano 61-Key Miniature Grand Piano User Manual

Introduction

The Korg microPiano is a compact digital piano designed with the aesthetic of a grand piano, featuring an opening lid. It incorporates Korg's expressive 61-key Natural Touch mini-keyboard, engineered for playability. The instrument produces a rich, stereo-sampled grand piano sound, utilizing the same samples found in Korg's higher-end digital pianos. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your microPiano.

Setup

1. Unpacking and Placement

  • Carefully remove the microPiano from its packaging.
  • Place the instrument on a stable, flat surface. Its dimensions are approximately 34.5 x 8.5 x 16 inches (87.6 x 21.6 x 40.6 cm) and it weighs about 11.44 pounds (5.2 kg).
  • Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit.

2. Power Supply

The Korg microPiano can be powered in two ways:

  • AC Adapter: Connect the included AC adapter to the DC IN jack on the rear panel of the microPiano and then to a standard electrical outlet.
  • Batteries: For portable use, the microPiano requires six AA batteries (alkaline recommended). Insert the batteries into the battery compartment located on the underside of the unit, ensuring correct polarity.

3. Audio Connections

  • Headphones/Auxiliary Output: A 3.5mm jack is provided for connecting headphones for private practice or for connecting to an external amplifier or sound system.

2. Adjusting Volume

Use the volume control knob or buttons to adjust the output level. Note that the volume control may be compact in size.

3. Sound Selection

The microPiano offers 61 distinct sounds, including various pianos, electric pianos, organs, harpsichords, and other instruments. Refer to the instrument's control panel for buttons or a dial to browse and select different sounds. The primary grand piano sound uses high-quality stereo samples.

4. Short Phrase Sounds

Among the 61 sounds, 25 are designated as "Short Phrase Sounds." These sounds automatically generate musical phrases when a key is held down. Examples include arpeggiated piano patterns or organ phrases. Experiment with these to discover unique musical textures and effects.

5. Demonstration Songs

The microPiano includes 40 demonstration songs, primarily classical compositions. These can be played back for enjoyment or as background music. The demonstration songs can be played with their pre-assigned sounds or with any other selected sound.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the surface of the microPiano. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner, then wipe dry immediately. Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: When not in use, keep the microPiano covered to protect it from dust. Store it in a location free from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight.
  • Battery Care: If using batteries, remove them if the instrument will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

Troubleshooting

No Sound

  • Ensure the power is on and the AC adapter is securely connected, or that batteries are correctly inserted and not depleted.
  • Check the volume level. Increase it if it is set too low.
  • If headphones are connected, ensure they are fully plugged in and functioning. Disconnect them to check if sound comes from the internal speakers.

Keys Not Responding

  • Ensure the instrument is powered on.
  • If only certain keys are not responding, gently clean around the keys. If the issue persists, professional service may be required.

Distorted Sound

  • Reduce the volume level.
  • If connected to an external amplifier, check the amplifier's input level and volume settings.
