Accessories:

Setup

Battery Installation:

  1. Tone Generator (77HP-G): Requires one 9V battery. Open the battery compartment on the back of the unit, connect the battery to the terminal, and place it inside. Close the compartment securely.
  2. Tone Probe Amplifier (200EP-G): Requires one 9V battery. Open the battery compartment on the back of the unit, connect the battery to the terminal, and place it inside. Close the compartment securely.

Always use fresh alkaline batteries for optimal performance. Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period.

Connecting the Tone Generator:

Before operation, connect the tone generator to the cable or wire pair you wish to trace:

Operating Instructions

Tracing Wires:

  1. Connect the 77HP-G Tone Generator to the wire or cable to be traced. Set the toggle switch to the 'TONE' position.
  2. Turn on the 200EP-G Tone Probe Amplifier. Adjust the gain control to a suitable level.
  3. Move the probe tip along the suspected wire path. The probe will emit an audible tone when it detects the signal from the generator.
  4. Follow the strongest tone to locate the wire. The LED on the probe tip will also illuminate more brightly as you get closer to the toned wire.

Identifying Wire Pairs:

When tracing a bundle of wires, use the probe to pinpoint the specific wire pair:

Checking for Voltage/Shorts:

The 77HP-G Tone Generator can also be used to check for voltage or shorts:

  1. Connect the tone generator to the wire pair using the alligator clips or modular cord.
  2. Set the toggle switch on the tone generator to the 'SHORT' or 'VOLTS' position.
  3. Observe the L1 and L2 LEDs on the tone generator.
  4. L1 (Green): Indicates the presence of voltage.
  5. L2 (Red): Indicates a short circuit.
  6. If both LEDs are off, there is no voltage or short detected.

Maintenance

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No tone from probe.Dead batteries in probe or generator; Generator not connected or turned on; Probe gain too low; Wire not connected to generator.Replace batteries; Ensure generator is on and connected; Increase probe gain; Verify wire connection.
Weak or intermittent tone.Low batteries; Poor connection; Excessive interference; Wire too far from probe.Replace batteries; Check all connections; Move away from power lines/sources of interference; Get closer to the wire.
False tone or multiple tones.Inductive coupling to adjacent wires; High gain setting; External electrical noise.Reduce probe gain; Ensure proper grounding of the black lead if toning network cables; Identify and mitigate noise sources.
Generator LEDs not lighting up in SHORT/VOLTS mode.No voltage or short present; Poor connection; Dead battery in generator.Verify circuit status; Check connections; Replace generator battery.
