- Gain Control: Adjusts the sensitivity of the probe.
- LED Button: Activates the LED worklight on the probe tip.
- Headset Port: Allows for connection of a headset for use in noisy environments.
- Resistive Plastic Carbon-Fiber Tip: Durable and safe for use on live circuits.
- LED Worklight: Illuminates the work area for better visibility.
Accessories:
- Rugged Woven Nylon Carrying Case
- RJ11/RJ45 Socket Adapter
Setup
Battery Installation:
- Tone Generator (77HP-G): Requires one 9V battery. Open the battery compartment on the back of the unit, connect the battery to the terminal, and place it inside. Close the compartment securely.
- Tone Probe Amplifier (200EP-G): Requires one 9V battery. Open the battery compartment on the back of the unit, connect the battery to the terminal, and place it inside. Close the compartment securely.
Always use fresh alkaline batteries for optimal performance. Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period.
Connecting the Tone Generator:
Before operation, connect the tone generator to the cable or wire pair you wish to trace:
- For RJ11/RJ45 Jacks: Use the integrated modular cord to plug directly into the jack.
- For Bare Wires/Terminals: Use the red and black alligator test leads. Connect the red lead to one conductor and the black lead to the other conductor or ground.
- For Coaxial Cables: Use the included RJ11/RJ45 socket adapter with the modular cord, or use an appropriate adapter with the alligator clips.
Operating Instructions
Tracing Wires:
- Connect the 77HP-G Tone Generator to the wire or cable to be traced. Set the toggle switch to the 'TONE' position.
- Turn on the 200EP-G Tone Probe Amplifier. Adjust the gain control to a suitable level.
- Move the probe tip along the suspected wire path. The probe will emit an audible tone when it detects the signal from the generator.
- Follow the strongest tone to locate the wire. The LED on the probe tip will also illuminate more brightly as you get closer to the toned wire.
Identifying Wire Pairs:
When tracing a bundle of wires, use the probe to pinpoint the specific wire pair:
- Isolate the wire bundle.
- Carefully move the probe tip across each wire or pair within the bundle.
- The wire or pair carrying the tone will produce the loudest and clearest sound from the probe.
Checking for Voltage/Shorts:
The 77HP-G Tone Generator can also be used to check for voltage or shorts:
- Connect the tone generator to the wire pair using the alligator clips or modular cord.
- Set the toggle switch on the tone generator to the 'SHORT' or 'VOLTS' position.
- Observe the L1 and L2 LEDs on the tone generator.
- L1 (Green): Indicates the presence of voltage.
- L2 (Red): Indicates a short circuit.
- If both LEDs are off, there is no voltage or short detected.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the units with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the kit in its carrying case in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the tone becomes weak or the LEDs dim. Always dispose of used batteries responsibly.
- Probe Tip: The resistive plastic carbon-fiber tip is designed for durability. If it becomes damaged, contact customer support for replacement options.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No tone from probe. | Dead batteries in probe or generator; Generator not connected or turned on; Probe gain too low; Wire not connected to generator. | Replace batteries; Ensure generator is on and connected; Increase probe gain; Verify wire connection. |
| Weak or intermittent tone. | Low batteries; Poor connection; Excessive interference; Wire too far from probe. | Replace batteries; Check all connections; Move away from power lines/sources of interference; Get closer to the wire. |
| False tone or multiple tones. | Inductive coupling to adjacent wires; High gain setting; External electrical noise. | Reduce probe gain; Ensure proper grounding of the black lead if toning network cables; Identify and mitigate noise sources. |
| Generator LEDs not lighting up in SHORT/VOLTS mode. | No voltage or short present; Poor connection; Dead battery in generator. | Verify circuit status; Check connections; Replace generator battery. |
