Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of your Pentax K-r Digital SLR Camera. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the camera and keep it in a safe place for future reference. The Pentax K-r is a compact and lightweight DSLR featuring a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, HD video recording, and a 3.0-inch LCD display, designed for both novice and experienced photographers.

Getting Started: Setup

1. Battery Installation

The K-r camera offers versatile power options, supporting either a rechargeable lithium-ion battery or four AA-size batteries (with an optional D-BH109 AA Battery Holder).

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the D-LI109 lithium-ion battery with the correct orientation, or insert four AA batteries into the optional D-BH109 holder and then place the holder into the compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

2. Memory Card Insertion

The camera uses SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (not included) for storing images and videos.

  1. Open the memory card slot cover on the side of the camera.
  2. Insert the memory card with the label facing the front of the camera until it clicks into place.
  3. Close the memory card slot cover.

3. Lens Attachment

Attach the provided 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens or another compatible Pentax K-mount lens.

  1. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear cap from the lens.
  2. Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on the camera body.
  3. Mount the lens by turning it clockwise until it locks into place with a click.

4. Powering On

Turn the power switch, located near the shutter button, to the 'ON' position.

Operating the Camera

1. Basic Shooting Modes

The mode dial on the top of the camera allows you to select various shooting modes.

2. Using the Viewfinder and LCD

The K-r features a bright optical viewfinder with 0.85X magnification and a 96% field of view, along with a large 3-inch LCD monitor (921,000 dots) for Live View shooting and reviewing images.

3. Adjusting ISO Sensitivity

The camera offers a wide ISO sensitivity range from 100 to 25600 (expandable from 200-12800 standard range) for optimal performance in various lighting conditions.

4. Capturing Stills

To take a photo:

  1. Frame your shot using the viewfinder or LCD.
  2. Press the shutter button halfway to activate autofocus. The 11-point SAFOX IX autofocus system will quickly lock onto your subject.
  3. Press the shutter button fully to capture the image.

The K-r supports high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 6 frames per second, capturing up to 25 JPEG images in a single sequence.

5. Recording HD Video

The camera can record high-definition movie clips in 16:9 proportions (1280 x 720 pixels) at 25 frames per second.

  1. Switch to movie mode (refer to your camera's specific button layout).
  2. Press the movie record button to start and stop recording.

Advanced Features

1. Shake Reduction (SR) Mechanism

The Pentax-developed SR mechanism effectively compensates for camera shake by up to approximately four shutter steps, ensuring sharp, blur-free images. This feature works with almost all Pentax interchangeable lenses.

2. High Dynamic Range (HDR) Function

The HDR function combines three images with different exposures into one composite image, creating an extra-wide gradation range. This is particularly useful for scenes with high contrast. Modes include Auto, Standard, and Expanded (three levels).

4. IrSimple High-Speed Infrared Data Transmission
