Setup

1. Attaching the Reel to a Fishing Rod

  1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fishing rod.
  2. Tighten the reel seat's locking nut securely until the reel is firmly attached and does not wobble. Do not overtighten.

2. Spooling Fishing Line

  1. Open the bail arm.
  2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an appropriate knot (e.g., arbor knot).
  3. Close the bail arm.
  4. Maintain slight tension on the line as you reel it onto the spool. Ensure the line lays evenly across the spool. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch (3mm) from the rim.

3. Adjusting Handle Orientation

The handle can be easily switched from left-hand to right-hand retrieve without tools. Simply unscrew the handle knob on one side, remove the handle shaft, and insert it into the opposite side of the reel body. Re-attach the handle knob and tighten it securely.

Operating

1. Casting

  1. Hold the fishing rod and reel comfortably.
  2. Use your index finger to hold the line against the rod.
  3. Open the bail arm.
  4. Swing the rod forward, releasing the line with your index finger at the desired point in the cast.
  5. Once the lure or bait hits the water, close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle.

2. Retrieving

Turn the handle to retrieve the line. The retrieve speed should match the fishing technique and lure action required.

3. Drag Adjustment

The drag system is located on the front of the spool. Turn the drag knob clockwise to increase drag tension and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Set the drag to allow line to be pulled off the spool under pressure, preventing line breakage and protecting your rod.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and smooth operation of your reel.

1. Cleaning After Use

  • After each use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  • Remove any dirt, sand, or debris from the exterior and moving parts.

2. Lubrication

  • Apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the handle shaft, bail arm pivot points, and line roller.
  • Apply reel grease to the main gears if accessible, following manufacturer guidelines for disassembly if necessary.
  • Do not over-lubricate, as this can attract dirt.

3. Storage

Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure the drag is loosened during storage to prevent compression of the drag washers.

Troubleshooting

  • Line Twists: Ensure proper line spooling. Avoid overfilling the spool. If twists occur, let out a long length of line behind a boat or in a current without a lure to allow it to untwist.
  • Stiff Retrieve: Check for dirt or debris in the gears or bearings. Lubricate moving parts as described in the Maintenance section.
  • Inconsistent Drag: Inspect drag washers for wear or contamination. Clean or replace if necessary. Ensure the drag knob is tightened correctly.
  • Bail Arm Not Closing: Check for obstructions or damage to the bail mechanism.

For issues not resolved by these steps, it is recommended to consult a professional reel repair service or contact Daiwa customer support.
