Before First Use
Before using your KRUPS KM1010 coffee maker for the first time, it is recommended to clean the appliance.

- Plug the coffee maker into a grounded electrical outlet.
Operating Instructions: Brewing Coffee
- Open the lid of the coffee maker.
- Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water to the desired level, using the water level windows for guidance. Do not exceed the maximum 10-cup mark.
- Place a standard paper filter (e.g., cone-shaped) into the removable filter basket, or use the permanent filter if provided.
- Add the desired amount of ground coffee into the filter. A general guideline is one tablespoon of coffee per cup, adjusted to personal preference.
- Carefully place the filter basket back into its holder, ensuring it is properly seated. Close the lid securely.
- Place the empty carafe with its lid onto the heating plate. Ensure the carafe is correctly positioned to activate the drip-stop mechanism.
- Press the power button. The indicator light will illuminate, signaling that the brewing cycle has started.
- Once the brewing cycle is complete, the coffee maker will automatically switch to the 'keep warm' function.
- Allow a few minutes for all the coffee to drip into the carafe before removing it.
Pause and Serve Function
The KRUPS KM1010 Prelude Coffee Maker features a convenient pause and serve function. This allows you to temporarily remove the carafe during the brewing cycle to pour a cup of coffee without drips. The brewing process will pause automatically when the carafe is removed and resume once it is placed back on the heating plate. For best results and to avoid overflow, do not remove the carafe for more than 20-30 seconds.
Keep Warm Function
After brewing, the coffee maker automatically enters a 2-hour 'keep warm' cycle. The heating plate will keep the coffee in the carafe warm during this period. After 2 hours, the coffee maker will automatically shut off for safety and energy conservation.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Daily Cleaning
- Always unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
- Wash the carafe and the removable filter basket in warm, soapy water. These parts are generally dishwasher safe (top rack only), but hand washing is recommended for longevity.
- Wipe the exterior of the coffee maker with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
- Never immerse the main unit, cord, or plug in water or any other liquid.
Descaling
Mineral deposits (limescale) can build up in your coffee maker over time, affecting performance and coffee taste. Descaling should be performed regularly, depending on water hardness and frequency of use (e.g., every 1-3 months).
- Prepare a descaling solution: Mix white vinegar and water in equal parts, or use a commercial descaling agent designed for coffee makers, following the product instructions.
- Pour the descaling solution into the water tank up to the 10-cup mark.
- Place the empty carafe on the heating plate.
- Start a brewing cycle. Allow half of the solution to brew through, then turn off the coffee maker and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the solution to work.
- Turn the coffee maker back on to complete the brewing cycle.
- Discard the solution from the carafe.
- Rinse the coffee maker by running 2-3 full cycles with fresh, cold water only, to remove any residual descaling solution.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee does not brew or brews slowly. | No water in tank, clogged filter basket, mineral buildup, carafe not properly placed. | Ensure water tank is filled. Check filter for clogs and clean. Perform descaling. Ensure carafe is fully seated on heating plate. |
| Coffee tastes weak. | Not enough coffee grounds, coarse grind, water not hot enough (due to mineral buildup). | Increase amount of coffee grounds. Use a finer grind. Descale the coffee maker. |
| Coffee overflows from filter basket. | Too much coffee grounds, filter basket not seated correctly, clogged filter. | Reduce coffee grounds. Ensure filter basket is firmly in place and lid is closed. Clean filter basket. |
| Water leaks from the machine. | Filter basket not correctly inserted, carafe not properly aligned, overfilling water tank. | Ensure the filter basket is fully pushed into its slot and the lid closes completely. Verify the carafe is centered on the heating plate. Do not fill water past the MAX line. |
| Coffee is not hot enough. | Mineral buildup, 'keep warm' function has ended. | Descale the coffee maker. Ensure coffee is consumed within the 2-hour keep warm period. |
