Eltako MFZ12-230V Analogue Adjustable Multifunction Time Relay

Model: MFZ12-230V | Brand: Eltako

1. Product Overview

The Eltako MFZ12-230V is an analogue adjustable multifunction time relay designed for various timing applications in electrical installations. It is a row-mounted unit suitable for mounting on a DIN-EN 60715 TH35 carrier rail, occupying one dividing unit (18 mm wide, 58 mm depth).

This relay features a potential-free 10A/250V AC shutter and supports 230V LEDs up to 200W and incandescent bulbs up to 1000W. It boasts a low standby loss of only 0.4 watts. The control voltage is 230V, which also serves as the supply voltage.

The device allows for time adjustments ranging from 0.1 seconds to 40 hours, offering a wide range of timing functions.

2. Key Features

  • Operating Type: Analogue with multi-function capabilities.
  • Functionality: Multifunction, offering various timing modes.
  • Time Range: Adjustable from 0.1 seconds to 40 hours.
  • Mounting: Designed for DIN Rail mounting (DIN-EN 60715 TH35).
  • Contact: 1 potential-free shutter, rated 10A/250V AC.
  • Power Consumption: Standby loss of only 0.4 watts.

3. Installation and Setup

The Eltako MFZ12-230V is designed for installation on a standard DIN-EN 60715 TH35 carrier rail within an electrical distribution board or enclosure. It occupies one standard dividing unit (18 mm) in width.

Warning: Installation of electrical devices should only be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local electrical codes and regulations. Incorrect installation can lead to electric shock, fire, or damage to the device.

3.1 Wiring Connections

Connect the 230V AC supply voltage to the designated terminals. The supply voltage also serves as the control voltage. Connect the load (e.g., lighting, motor) to the potential-free shutter contacts. Refer to the wiring diagram printed on the device for specific terminal assignments (typically L/A1-N for supply and 1-2 for the contact).

  • L/A1: Live input (230V AC)
  • N: Neutral input
  • 1: Common contact of the relay
  • 2: Normally Open (NO) contact of the relay

Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated.

4. Operating Instructions

The MFZ12-230V features three rotary switches for setting the desired function and time parameters.

4.1 Function Selection (F Switch)

The bottom rotary switch, labeled 'F', is used to select the desired operating mode. The available functions are:

  • RV: Relapse delay (delay on break)
  • OFF: Response delay (delay on make)
  • TI: Beat sensor starts with impulse
  • TP: Clock sensor with pause
  • IA: Heart-controlled response (e.g., automatic door opener)
  • EW: Turn on dryer (pulse extension)
  • AW: Off dryer (pulse shortening)
  • AV: Response and recurrence delay
  • ON: Duration ON (continuous ON)
  • By: Duration of (continuous OFF)

4.2 Time Base Setting (T Switch)

The middle rotary switch, labeled 'T', sets the basic time unit. Available time bases are:

  • 0.1 seconds
  • 0.5 seconds
  • 2 seconds
  • 5 seconds
  • 1 minute
  • 2 minutes
  • 5 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 2 hours
  • 4 hours

4.3 Time Multiplier Setting (xT Switch)

The top rotary switch, labeled 'xT', sets the multiplier for the selected time base. The multiplier ranges from 1 to 10.

The total time is calculated by multiplying the time base (T) by the multiplier (xT). For example, if T is set to "1 minute" and xT is set to "5", the total time will be 5 minutes.

This allows for setting times between 0.1 seconds (0.1s time base x 1 multiplier) and 40 hours (4 hours time base x 10 multiplier).

4.4 LED Indicator

A light diode located under the top rotary switch provides information about the contact position and timing status:

  • The LED flashes as long as the working contact is open and the timing sequence is active.
  • The LED illuminates continuously as long as the working contact is closed.

Note: The maximum load capacity of the relay (10A/250V AC) can be fully utilized for delay or clock times of 5 minutes or longer. For shorter times, the maximum load reduces:

  • Up to 2 minutes: Maximum load reduces by up to 15%.
  • Up to 5 minutes: Maximum load reduces by up to 30%.
  • Below 5 minutes: Maximum load reduces by up to 60%.

5. Maintenance

The Eltako MFZ12-230V time relay is designed for long-term, maintenance-free operation. However, periodic inspection of electrical connections is recommended to ensure they remain secure.

  • Cleaning: If necessary, gently wipe the exterior of the device with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or liquids directly on the unit.
  • Power Disconnection: Always disconnect power to the circuit before performing any inspection or cleaning of the device or its connections.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues and their potential solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on / LED is off.No supply voltage; incorrect wiring; tripped circuit breaker.Verify 230V AC supply at L/A1 and N terminals. Check wiring connections. Reset circuit breaker. Consult a qualified electrician.
Timing function not activating.Incorrect function (F) setting; incorrect time (T, xT) setting; no trigger signal (if applicable to function).Review and adjust F, T, and xT settings according to desired operation. Ensure the trigger condition for the selected function is met.
Load not switching.Load wiring issue; load exceeding maximum capacity; faulty load.Check connections to terminals 1 and 2. Ensure load current does not exceed 10A. Test the load independently.
LED flashes but contact does not close.Timing sequence not completed; internal fault.Wait for the set time to elapse. If issue persists, consult Eltako support or a qualified electrician.

If problems persist after attempting these solutions, contact Eltako customer support or a qualified electrical professional.
