1. Product Overview

The SYLVANIA Lumalux High Pressure Sodium (HPS) HID Light Bulb is designed for best-in-class illumination in various applications. This 70W ED17 bulb provides 4000 lumens with a warm 1900K color temperature, ideal for areas requiring robust and long-lasting lighting.

Common applications include atriums, flood lighting, industrial lighting, commercial lighting, retail lighting, lobbies, parking lots, and security lighting.

2. Safety Information

• Always disconnect power before installing or replacing the bulb.
• Ensure the bulb wattage and type match the fixture's ballast requirements. Incorrect matching can lead to bulb failure or damage to the fixture.
• Handle the bulb with care to avoid breakage. Do not touch the glass with bare hands, as oils can reduce bulb life. Use a clean cloth or gloves.
• This bulb operates at high temperatures. Allow the bulb and fixture to cool completely before handling.
• Dispose of used bulbs according to local regulations, as they may contain mercury.

3. Installation and Setup

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your SYLVANIA Lumalux HID bulb.

1. Verify Compatibility: Ensure your fixture is designed for High Pressure Sodium (HPS) bulbs and that its ballast is compatible with a 70W ED17 bulb with an E26 Medium Base. The bulb's ANSI Code is M47/O.
2. Power Disconnection: Turn off the power to the fixture at the circuit breaker before beginning installation.
3. Remove Old Bulb (if applicable): If replacing an old bulb, allow it to cool completely. Unscrew the old bulb counter-clockwise.
4. Install New Bulb: Carefully screw the new SYLVANIA Lumalux bulb into the E26 Medium Base socket by turning it clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten.
5. Restore Power: Once the bulb is securely installed, restore power to the fixture at the circuit breaker.

4. Operating Instructions

The SYLVANIA Lumalux 70W HID bulb provides immediate and consistent illumination once power is supplied.

• Initial Ignition: Upon first use or after a power interruption, the bulb may take a few minutes to reach full brightness and color stability. This is normal for High Pressure Sodium lamps.
• Re-ignition: If the bulb is turned off, it requires a cool-down period before it can re-ignite. This typically takes 5-10 minutes.
• Color Temperature: This bulb produces a Soft White light with a color temperature of 1900 Kelvin, characteristic of High Pressure Sodium lamps.
• Brightness: The bulb delivers 4000 lumens, providing significant illumination for large areas.

5. Maintenance

The SYLVANIA Lumalux HID bulb is designed for long-term, low-maintenance operation.

• Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the bulb and fixture with a soft, dry cloth to ensure optimal light output. Ensure power is off and the bulb is cool before cleaning.
• Expected Lifespan: This bulb has an average rated life of 24,000 hours, significantly reducing the frequency of replacements.
• End of Life: As the bulb approaches the end of its life, it may exhibit flickering or a change in light output. Replace the bulb when these signs become apparent.

6. Troubleshooting

If your SYLVANIA Lumalux HID bulb is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues and solutions:

• Bulb does not light up:
  • Check if the power supply to the fixture is active.
  • Ensure the bulb is securely screwed into the socket.
  • Verify that the bulb and ballast are compatible. An incompatible ballast will prevent the bulb from igniting.
  • If the bulb was recently turned off, allow 5-10 minutes for it to cool down before attempting to re-ignite.
  • Inspect the bulb for any visible damage or breakage.
• Bulb flickers or cycles on and off:
  • This can indicate the bulb is nearing its end of life and needs replacement.
  • Ensure the fixture's wiring is secure and there are no loose connections.
  • Check for proper voltage supply to the fixture.
• Reduced light output:
  • The bulb may be dirty; clean it as described in the Maintenance section.
  • Reduced light output can also be a sign of an aging bulb.
