Figure 1: Rusco 1-140ss-f Filter System Overview

The Rusco 1-140ss-f filter system comprises several key components:

  • Filter Head: The white PVC top section (Rusco 1b) with clearly marked 'IN' and 'OUT' ports for water flow.
  • Clear Cover/Housing: Made of high-impact polymer resin (Rusco 1c), this transparent section allows for visual inspection of the filter screen and collected sediment. It is designed for easy removal without tools.
  • Stainless Steel Filter Screen: The internal filtration element (Rusco Fs-1-140ss) responsible for trapping sediment.
  • Flush Valve: A separate red-handled PVC ball valve (.5fv) attached to the bottom of the clear cover, used for manual flushing of accumulated sediment.
  • O-ring Kit: Replacement O-rings (Rusco 1or) ensure a watertight seal.
  • Optional Accessories:
    • Spigot Adapter Bushings (Rusco 1sa): Used to convert inlet and outlet male slip fittings to female thread fittings for installation flexibility.
    • Sun Shield (Rusco Ss1): An optional accessory to block sunlight from coming through the clear cover, preventing algae growth.
    • Automatic Flush Valve (Rusco Afv): An optional accessory for automating the flushing process.

Setup and Installation

The Rusco filter system is designed for under-sink installation. Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent leaks. It is recommended to have a qualified plumber perform the installation if you are not experienced with plumbing work.

  1. Location Selection: Choose a suitable location under the sink or at the main water line entry point where the filter can be easily accessed for maintenance. Ensure there is enough space for the unit and for flushing.
  2. Water Shut-off: Turn off the main water supply to your home before beginning installation. Open a faucet to relieve pressure in the lines.
  3. Cutting Pipe: Cut into the existing cold water line at the chosen installation point. Ensure clean, straight cuts.
  4. Connecting the Filter: Install the filter head (Rusco 1b) into the water line, ensuring the 'IN' and 'OUT' arrows align with the direction of water flow. Use appropriate fittings and sealants (e.g., Teflon tape) to ensure watertight connections. If converting slip fittings, use Rusco 1sa Spigot Adapter Bushings as needed.
  5. Attaching Clear Cover and Screen: Insert the stainless steel filter screen (Rusco Fs-1-140ss) into the clear cover (Rusco 1c). Attach the clear cover assembly to the filter head. Hand tighten only; no tools are required.
  6. Installing Flush Valve: Connect the manual flush valve (.5fv) to the threaded outlet at the bottom of the clear cover. Ensure it is securely tightened.
  7. Leak Check: Slowly turn the main water supply back on. Carefully inspect all connections for leaks. Tighten any leaking connections as necessary.
  8. Initial Flush: Open the flush valve for a few minutes to clear any air and initial debris from the system.

Note: The Rusco filter system is made of non-corrosive materials. If your home relies on the water pipe as a ground for the electrical system, consult a qualified electrician regarding proper grounding procedures after installation, as the all-plastic construction of the filter may interrupt the ground path.

Operating Instructions

The Rusco Spin-down Filter System operates continuously once installed. Its primary function is to filter sediment from your water supply. The main operational task for the user is periodic flushing.

Manual Flushing Procedure:

Regular flushing is essential to remove accumulated sediment from the filter screen and maintain optimal water flow and filtration efficiency. The frequency of flushing depends on the amount of sediment in your water.

  1. Observe Sediment: Periodically check the clear cover of the filter. You will see sediment accumulating at the bottom of the housing.
  2. Open Flush Valve: Position a bucket or drain hose under the manual flush valve. Slowly open the red-handled ball valve at the bottom of the filter.
  3. Flush Sediment: Allow water to flow out of the valve for a few seconds (typically 5-10 seconds) until the water runs clear. This process flushes the trapped sediment from the screen and housing.
  4. Close Flush Valve: Close the flush valve securely.

Tip: For heavily sedimented water, you may need to flush daily or every few days. For cleaner water, weekly or monthly flushing may suffice. The clear housing allows you to visually determine when flushing is needed.

Automatic Flushing (with optional AFV):

If you have installed the optional Rusco Automatic Flush Valve (AFV), refer to the specific instructions provided with the AFV for programming and operation. The AFV automates the flushing process at set intervals.

Maintenance

Beyond regular flushing, the Rusco filter system requires minimal maintenance. The primary maintenance task is occasional cleaning of the filter screen and housing.

Cleaning the Filter Screen and Housing:

If flushing alone does not adequately clear the screen, or if you notice a significant drop in water pressure, a more thorough cleaning may be necessary.

  1. Shut Off Water: Turn off the main water supply to the filter system.
  2. Relieve Pressure: Open the manual flush valve to drain water from the housing and relieve pressure.
  3. Remove Clear Cover: Unscrew the clear cover (Rusco 1c) from the filter head by hand. No tools are required.
  4. Remove Filter Screen: Carefully remove the stainless steel filter screen (Rusco Fs-1-140ss) from inside the clear cover.
  5. Clean Components: Rinse the filter screen and the inside of the clear cover thoroughly under running water. A soft brush can be used to gently scrub stubborn deposits from the screen. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  6. Inspect O-ring: Inspect the O-ring (Rusco 1or) for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage. If damaged, replace it with a new Rusco 1or O-ring. Ensure the O-ring is clean and properly seated in its groove.
  7. Reassemble: Place the clean filter screen back into the clear cover. Carefully screw the clear cover assembly back onto the filter head. Hand tighten only.
  8. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn the main water supply back on and check for leaks.

Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter with your Rusco Spin-down Filter System.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Reduced Water PressureClogged filter screen due to excessive sediment buildup.Perform a manual flush. If pressure does not improve, remove and thoroughly clean the filter screen and housing as described in the Maintenance section.
Water Leaking from HousingClear cover not tightened sufficiently; Damaged or improperly seated O-ring.Ensure the clear cover is hand-tightened securely. If leaking persists, shut off water, remove cover, inspect and reseat the O-ring. Replace O-ring if damaged.
Water Leaking from Flush ValveValve not fully closed; Damaged flush valve.Ensure the flush valve is completely closed. If leaking continues, the valve may be faulty and require replacement (Rusco .5fv).
Sediment Still Visible After FlushingInsufficient flushing duration; Extremely heavy sediment load; Screen requires manual cleaning.Increase flushing duration. If water is very dirty, flush more frequently. If sediment is stuck to the screen, perform a manual cleaning.
