2. Important Safety Instructions
- Read Instructions: Carefully read and understand all safety and operating instructions before using this product.
- Retain Instructions: Keep these instructions for future reference.
- Heed Warnings: Observe all warnings on the product and in the operating instructions.
- Water and Moisture: Do not use this apparatus near water or moisture.
- Heat: Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
- Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation. Do not block any ventilation openings.
- Power Cord Protection: Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
- Cleaning: Clean only with a dry cloth.
- Servicing: Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
- Grounding: This apparatus must be grounded.
3. Setup and Connections
Follow these steps to set up your Laney CUB-10 amplifier:
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the amplifier from its packaging. Inspect for any signs of damage.
- Placement: Place the amplifier on a stable, level surface, ensuring adequate ventilation around the unit. Avoid placing it near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
- Power Connection: Ensure the amplifier's power switch is in the 'OFF' (0) position. Connect the integrated power cord to a suitable grounded AC power outlet.
- Instrument Connection: Connect your electric guitar to either the 'HI' (High Input) or 'LO' (Low Input) jack on the front panel using a high-quality instrument cable. The 'HI' input provides higher gain, while the 'LO' input offers a cleaner signal with less gain.
- External Speaker (Optional): If you wish to use an external speaker cabinet, connect it to the 'EXTERNAL SPEAKER' jack on the rear panel. Ensure the external cabinet's impedance matches the amplifier's output (8-16 ohms). Disconnecting the internal speaker is not required when using an external speaker.

4. Operating the Amplifier
Once connected, you can begin operating your CUB-10 amplifier:
- Power On: Flip the 'POWER' switch to the 'ON' (I) position. The power indicator light will illuminate. Allow a few moments for the tubes to warm up.
- Controls Overview: The front panel features the following controls:
- POWER Switch: Turns the amplifier on or off.
- TONE: Adjusts the overall tonal character, from darker to brighter.
- VOLUME: Controls the overall output level of the amplifier.
- GAIN: Adjusts the amount of pre-amp drive and distortion. Higher settings produce more overdrive.
- INPUT (LO/HI): Connect your guitar here. 'HI' for higher gain, 'LO' for lower gain/cleaner tones.
- Adjusting Sound: Start with the 'VOLUME' and 'GAIN' controls at a low setting. Gradually increase 'VOLUME' to your desired listening level. Use the 'GAIN' control to dial in the amount of overdrive, from clean to crunchy. Adjust the 'TONE' control to shape your sound.
- Experimentation: Experiment with different combinations of 'GAIN', 'VOLUME', and 'TONE' to discover the wide range of sounds the CUB-10 can produce.

5. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your amplifier.
- Cleaning: Disconnect the amplifier from power before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Tube Care: The CUB-10 uses vacuum tubes (2 x ECC83 and 2 x EL84) which have a finite lifespan. If you notice a decrease in performance, excessive noise, or inconsistent sound, the tubes may need replacement. This should be performed by qualified service personnel.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the amplifier in a dry, temperature-controlled environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Ventilation: Always ensure the amplifier has adequate ventilation during operation to prevent overheating.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your CUB-10 amplifier, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound | Amplifier not powered on; volume/gain too low; faulty instrument cable; speaker disconnected. | Check power switch and indicator light; increase volume/gain; test with a different cable; ensure internal/external speaker is connected. |
| Weak or distorted sound | Faulty tubes; incorrect input selection; damaged speaker. | Consult qualified service personnel for tube inspection/replacement; ensure guitar is plugged into appropriate input (HI/LO); check speaker connection. |
| Excessive hum or noise | Ground loop; faulty cable; proximity to other electronic devices; worn tubes. | Ensure proper grounding; try different cables; move amplifier away from other electronics; consult service personnel for tube inspection. |
| No power indicator light | No power from outlet; blown fuse; faulty power switch. | Check power outlet with another device; replace fuse (refer to service manual or qualified technician); contact service personnel. |
If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact qualified service personnel.
