Blue Wave 18-Inch Sand Filter System User Manual

Model: NE6150 | Brand: Blue Wave

1. Introduction and Overview

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, installation, and maintenance of your Blue Wave 18-Inch Sand Filter System with 1 HP Pump. This system is designed to provide superior filtration for above-ground pools up to 16,000 gallons, ensuring clear and clean water. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to install or operate the unit.

2. Safety Information

Always follow basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of injury, fire, electric shock, or property damage. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or death.

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure the power supply matches the pump's requirements. Always connect to a grounded outlet protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Do not operate the pump if the power cord is damaged.
  • Water and Chemical Safety: Never operate the pump dry. Ensure proper water flow to prevent overheating. Handle pool chemicals with care and follow manufacturer's instructions.
  • Pressure Safety: The filter operates under pressure. Do not attempt to open the filter or pump while the system is running. Always relieve pressure before servicing.
  • Children: Keep children away from the equipment area. This appliance is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.
  • Installation: Install the system on a firm, level surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the pump and filter.

4.2 Assembly Steps

  1. Position the Base: Place the sturdy filter base on a firm, level surface near your above-ground pool. Ensure it is within reach of a grounded electrical outlet.
  2. Place the Tank: Carefully place the sand filter tank onto the filter base.
  3. Add Filter Media: Fill the sand filter tank with the appropriate amount and type of filter sand (typically #20 silica sand). Refer to the tank's capacity for exact requirements (e.g., 110 lbs sand capacity for this model). Ensure the standpipe is centered while adding sand.
  4. Install Multi-Port Valve: Securely attach the 6-position multi-port valve to the top of the sand filter tank. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated and the clamp is tightened to prevent leaks.
  5. Connect Pump: Position the high-flow pump next to the filter tank on the base. Connect the pump to the multi-port valve using the provided connection hoses and clamps.
  6. Connect Pool Hoses: Connect the pool's skimmer line to the pump's inlet and the pool's return line to the multi-port valve's 'RETURN' port. Use the provided 3-ft pressure hose for the connection between the pump and the filter valve.
  7. Install Pressure Gauge: Screw the pressure gauge into the designated port on the multi-port valve.
  8. Prime the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump is filled with water to prime it. This prevents dry running and damage.
  9. Electrical Connection: Plug the pump into a grounded GFCI-protected electrical outlet.

5. Operating Instructions

The 6-position multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing valve positions to prevent damage.

  • FILTER: This is the normal operating position for daily filtration. Water flows from the pool, through the filter sand, and back to the pool.
  • BACKWASH: Used for cleaning the filter sand. Water flows in reverse through the filter, flushing trapped debris out the waste port. Perform backwash when the pressure gauge reads 5-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure.
  • RINSE: Used after backwashing to settle the sand and flush any remaining dirty water from the valve. Run for 30-60 seconds.
  • WASTE (DRAIN): Bypasses the filter and sends water directly out the waste port. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  • RECIRCULATE (BYPASS): Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool. Useful for circulating chemicals without filtering.
  • CLOSED (WINTERIZE): Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use this position when performing maintenance or during winterization. Never operate the pump with the valve in the CLOSED position.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your sand filter system.

  • Backwashing: Backwash the filter regularly as indicated by the pressure gauge (when pressure rises 5-10 PSI above normal). This removes trapped debris and maintains filtration efficiency.
  • Cleaning Lint Pot: The pump features an extra-large hair and lint strainer. Periodically turn off the pump, relieve pressure, and clean out any accumulated debris from the strainer basket.
  • Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Refer to the sand manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Winterization: Before freezing temperatures, drain all water from the pump, filter, and hoses. Store the pump and multi-port valve in a dry, protected area.

7. Troubleshooting

Refer to the following table for common issues and their potential solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low Water FlowClogged skimmer/pump basket, dirty filter sand, air leak in suction line, closed valve.Clean baskets, backwash filter, check for air leaks, ensure all valves are open.
Cloudy Pool WaterInsufficient filtration time, dirty filter sand, improper chemical balance, too much sand in filter.Increase filtration time, backwash/rinse filter, test and adjust pool chemicals, ensure correct sand level.
Pump Not PrimingAir leak in suction line, low water level in pool, clogged impeller.Check all connections for leaks, ensure adequate pool water level, clear impeller of debris.
Water Leaking from ValveDamaged O-ring, loose clamp, cracked valve body.Inspect and replace O-rings, tighten clamps, contact support if valve body is cracked.
