Fairfield Circuitry Randy's Revenge
Randy's Revenge Ring Modulator User Manual
Model: Randy's Revenge | Brand: Fairfield Circuitry
Introduction
The Fairfield Circuitry Randy's Revenge is an all-analog ring modulator pedal designed for guitar and other instruments. It features a pure sine wave oscillator and a low-pass filter, offering a wide range of sonic possibilities from subtle tremolo and vibe effects to thick bells, tuned intervals, and synth-like textures. Its expanded control voltage (CV) capabilities allow for advanced integration with other CV-capable devices.
Product Overview

Figure 1: Top view of the Randy's Revenge Ring Modulator, displaying the main control knobs (Volume, Mix, Freq, LPF) and toggle switches (SQ/SI, HI/LO), along with the footswitch and an LED indicator.

Figure 2: Rear view of the Randy's Revenge Ring Modulator, illustrating the power input (9V) and audio connections (IN, OUT, CV).
Setup
- Power Connection: Connect a standard 9V DC power supply (center negative) to the 9V input jack on the rear of the pedal. The pedal requires 9 Volts and approximately 200 Milliamps.
- Audio Input: Connect your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the "IN" jack using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Audio Output: Connect the "OUT" jack to your amplifier or the next pedal in your signal chain using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- CV Connection (Optional): For advanced control, connect compatible control voltage devices to the "CV" jack. The stereo CV port can be switch-programmed for an expression pedal or as a 2-channel CV port.
Operating Instructions
Controls:
- VOLUME: Adjusts the overall output level of the pedal. Can also add a subtle signal boost and dirt to the signal when increased.
- MIX: Controls the blend between the dry (unaffected) signal and the wet (ring modulated) signal. Turn clockwise for more modulated effect.
- FREQ: Adjusts the frequency of the internal sine wave oscillator. Lower frequencies create tremolo/vibe effects, while higher frequencies produce bell-like tones, tuned intervals, and synth sounds. This control is voltage-controllable via the CV input.
- LPF (Low-Pass Filter): Controls the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter. Experimenting with this knob allows for shaping the tone from strange to subtle. This control is also voltage-controllable via the CV input.
- SQ/SI Switch: Toggles between Square wave and Sine wave modulation. The internal oscillator is pure sine wave.
- HI/LO Switch: Selects the frequency range for the oscillator. "LO" provides lower frequencies suitable for tremolo and vibe effects, while "HI" accesses higher frequencies for ring modulation and synth-like sounds.
- Footswitch: Engages or bypasses the effect. The LED indicator illuminates when the effect is active.
Basic Operation:
- Ensure the pedal is properly connected to power and your audio chain.
- Press the footswitch to activate the effect (LED will light up).
- Start with the MIX knob at 12 o'clock, VOLUME to taste, and FREQ/LPF at a moderate setting.
- Experiment with the FREQ knob to explore different modulation speeds (LO range) or harmonic content (HI range).
- Adjust the LPF knob to filter the modulated sound, making it brighter or darker.
- Use the MIX knob to blend the desired amount of the ring modulated signal with your dry signal.
Advanced CV Capabilities:
The Randy's Revenge offers extensive CV integration. Both the oscillator frequency (FREQ) and the low-pass filter frequency (LPF) are voltage-controllable. The internal oscillator can also be used as a stand-alone voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) via an output, allowing Randy's Revenge to control or be controlled by other CV-capable devices.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Power: Always use the specified 9V DC (center negative) power supply. Incorrect power can damage the unit.
- Connections: Ensure all cables are securely connected to prevent signal loss or intermittent operation.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound when pedal is engaged. | Incorrect power supply; cables not connected properly; MIX knob set to full dry. | Verify 9V DC (center negative) power supply. Check all audio cable connections. Adjust MIX knob clockwise. |
| Effect is too subtle or too extreme. | MIX, FREQ, or LPF knobs are not optimally set. | Adjust MIX to blend dry/wet signals. Experiment with FREQ and LPF to find desired intensity and tone. |
| Unwanted noise or hum. | Ground loop; faulty power supply; interference from other electronics. | Use an isolated power supply. Try a different power outlet. Move pedal away from other electronic devices. |
| LED does not light up. | No power; pedal is bypassed. | Ensure power supply is connected and functional. Press footswitch to engage the effect. |
