Setup and Installation

The Pelican HDPE SLED HYFAX Runner Kit is designed for easy installation. Follow these steps to properly attach the runners to your Trek 60 sled. Ensure you have the necessary tools before beginning.

Tools Required:

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Sled: Turn your Pelican Trek 60 sled upside down on a stable, flat surface. Ensure the sled is clean and free of debris.
  2. Identify Mounting Locations: The Trek 60 sled has pre-molded dimples or grooves on its bottom surface that indicate where the runners should be placed and where screws should be inserted. Align each of the three runners with these designated areas.
  3. Position Runners: Place one runner along a designated groove on the sled's bottom. The red side of the runner should face the sled, and the white side should face outwards (towards the ground).
  4. Drill Pilot Holes: Starting from the front (curved end) of the sled, use a 3/32" drill bit to drill a pilot hole through the sled and into the runner at the first designated screw location.
  5. Secure First Screw: Insert one of the provided screws through the drilled hole from the inside of the sled and into the runner. Hand-tighten it with a Phillips head screwdriver. Do not overtighten at this stage.
  6. Form the Runner (if needed): If installing in cold conditions, the runners may be stiff. Gently heat the runner with a heat gun or hair dryer (on a low setting) as you gradually bend it to conform to the sled's contour. This step may require assistance to hold the runner in place.
  7. Drill and Secure Remaining Screws: Continue drilling pilot holes (3/32") and securing screws along the length of the runner, following the sled's pre-marked locations. Once all screws for one runner are in place, use a 3/16" drill bit to enlarge the holes in the sled itself (not the runners) to allow for slight expansion/contraction and prevent stress cracking. Then, fully tighten all screws by hand.
  8. Repeat for Remaining Runners: Follow steps 3-7 for the other two runners.
  9. Final Check: Ensure all runners are securely attached and all screws are hand-tightened.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Runners feel stiff during installation.Cold temperatures make HDPE less flexible.Use a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting to gently warm the runners, making them more pliable for bending.
Runners are loose or shifting.Mounting screws are not tight enough.Hand-tighten all mounting screws. Avoid overtightening with power tools, which can strip the plastic.
Red layer visible on runners.Normal wear and tear; runners are worn down.Replace the runners promptly to prevent damage to the sled's main body.
Sled is difficult to tow despite runners.Excessive load, unsuitable terrain, or worn runners.Reduce load, check runners for wear (replace if red layer is visible), or consider the terrain's suitability for sledding.
