Installation
Safety Precautions
- Turn off power to the heating/cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel before installation.
- This thermostat operates on 24 VAC or Millivolt systems. Ensure compatibility with your HVAC system.
- If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified HVAC technician.
Mounting Location
Install the thermostat on an inside wall, approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the floor. Choose a location with good air circulation, away from direct sunlight, drafts, or heat sources (e.g., lamps, appliances, fireplaces).
Wiring Instructions
- Turn off power to the heating/cooling system.
- Remove the old thermostat from the wall.
- Label the wires connected to your old thermostat with the corresponding terminal letters before disconnecting them.
- Mount the new thermostat base plate to the wall using the provided screws.
- Connect the labeled wires to the appropriate terminals on the new thermostat. Refer to the wiring diagram specific to your heat pump system (typically found in your HVAC system's manual or by consulting a professional).
- Insert the two AA batteries into the battery compartment.
- Attach the thermostat body to the base plate.
- Restore power to the heating/cooling system.

Operation
The Emerson 1F89-0211 thermostat features a simple interface for controlling your home's temperature.
System Switch
The system switch allows you to select the operating mode for your HVAC system.
- COOL: Activates the cooling system.
- OFF: Turns off both heating and cooling systems.
- HEAT: Activates the heating system.
Fan Switch
The fan switch controls the operation of your system's fan.
- ON: The fan runs continuously, regardless of whether the heating or cooling system is active.
- AUTO: The fan runs only when the heating or cooling system is actively operating.
Temperature Adjustment
Use the Up (▲) and Down (▼) arrow buttons on the right side of the thermostat to adjust the desired temperature setting. The current temperature and set temperature will be displayed on the 2-inch LCD screen.
Maintenance
Battery Replacement
The thermostat is dual-powered (hardwired or battery powered). If using batteries, replace the two AA batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display.
- Gently pull the thermostat body away from the wall plate.
- Remove the old AA batteries.
- Insert two new AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Snap the thermostat body back onto the wall plate.
Cleaning
Clean the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
