4. Setup and Activation

The Yuasa YT12B-BS battery is shipped dry and requires activation by filling with the supplied electrolyte pack. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Preparation: Place the battery on a level surface. Ensure you are wearing appropriate safety gear (eye protection, gloves).
  2. Remove Sealing Strip: Carefully remove the sealing strip from the top of the battery. Do not discard this strip as it will be used later.
  3. Prepare Acid Pack: Remove the black cap from the acid pack tubes. Do not remove the foil seals.
  4. Fill Battery: Invert the acid pack and align the six nozzles with the six filler holes on the battery. Press down firmly to break the foil seals and allow the electrolyte to flow into the battery. Do not tilt the battery or the acid pack during this process.
  5. Wait for Filling: Allow approximately 20 minutes for the electrolyte to completely drain from the acid pack into the battery. Tap the acid pack gently if necessary to ensure all liquid is transferred.
  6. Rest Period: After filling, let the battery stand for at least one hour with the filler holes open. This allows the electrolyte to be fully absorbed by the AGM separators and for any trapped gases to escape.
  7. Seal Battery: Once the rest period is complete, firmly press the sealing strip (removed in step 2) onto the filler holes until it is flush with the top of the battery. This permanently seals the battery. Do not remove this strip once installed.
  8. Initial Charge: After sealing, the battery requires an initial charge. Refer to the 'Operating' section for charging instructions.

5. Operating

After activation, the battery is ready for use. However, an initial charge is recommended for optimal performance and lifespan.

5.1 Initial Charging

Connect the battery to a suitable motorcycle battery charger. The recommended charging methods are:

  • Standard Charge: 1.0 Amp for 5-10 hours.
  • Quick Charge: 5.0 Amps for 1 hour.

Ensure the charger is compatible with AGM batteries. Do not overcharge the battery.

5.2 Periodic Charging

While Yuasa AGM batteries are maintenance-free and hold their charge well, periodic charging is required when the battery is not in regular use, especially during storage or off-season periods. Use a trickle charger or a smart charger designed for AGM batteries to maintain optimal charge levels. This prevents sulfation and extends battery life.

6. Maintenance

The Yuasa YT12B-BS is a Maintenance Free (MF) battery, meaning it does not require water additions. However, proper care ensures longevity:

  • Keep Clean: Regularly inspect the battery for dirt, grime, or corrosion on the terminals. Clean terminals with a wire brush and a solution of baking soda and water if necessary. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
  • Terminal Connections: Ensure terminal connections are tight and secure. Loose connections can lead to poor performance and heat buildup.
  • Storage: If storing the vehicle or battery for an extended period, disconnect the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Periodically charge the battery (every 1-2 months) to prevent self-discharge below critical voltage levels.
  • Avoid Deep Discharge: Do not allow the battery to fully discharge. Deep discharges can significantly reduce battery life.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your Yuasa YT12B-BS battery, consider the following common problems and solutions:

  • Battery Not Holding Charge:
    • Ensure the battery was properly activated and fully charged initially.
    • Check for parasitic drains in the vehicle's electrical system.
    • Verify the charging system of the vehicle is functioning correctly (alternator/stator).
    • The battery may have reached the end of its service life.
  • Weak Starting Power:
    • Ensure the battery is fully charged.
    • Check for loose or corroded terminal connections.
    • Verify the battery's Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) are sufficient for the vehicle's requirements.
  • Battery Overheating During Charge:
    • Disconnect the charger immediately.
    • Ensure the charger is appropriate for AGM batteries and not set to an excessively high current.
    • The battery may be faulty or internally damaged.

For persistent issues or if you suspect a faulty battery, consult a qualified technician or contact Yuasa customer support.
