Safety Information

WARNING: Shock Hazard. To avoid risk of serious injury or death, always turn power off at the circuit breaker before wiring any electrical device. Ensure all local and national electrical codes are followed during installation. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified electrician.

  • Always verify that the power supply is disconnected before beginning any work.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as insulated gloves and safety glasses.
  • Ensure the connector's voltage and amperage ratings match your application's requirements.
  • Do not use the connector if it appears damaged.

Setup and Installation

This section provides detailed instructions for wiring the Leviton 2833 Locking Connector. For a visual guide, please refer to the instructional video below.

Official Leviton video demonstrating how to wire Black & White plugs and connectors. This video covers the steps for safely and correctly connecting wires to the device, including preparing the cable, stripping wires, and securing connections. (Duration: 3:47)

Wiring Instructions:

  1. Prepare for Wiring: Before wiring any plug or connector, ensure the power to the cable is turned off at the circuit breaker. The faceplate of the device is stamped with the NEMA configuration, amperage, and voltage for verification.
  2. Disassemble the Connector: Use a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen the quick screws on the faceplate. Carefully remove the faceplate from the body housing.
  3. Prepare the Strain Relief: Loosen the two strain relief screws on the strain relief component. Feed your cable through the strain relief and then through the body housing.
  4. Strip the Cable Jacket: Strip the cord jacket according to the diagram found on the instruction sheet. Your individual wire leads should be approximately 1.5 inches long. Remove the cord jacket to expose the internal wires.
  5. Prepare Individual Wires: Your ground (green) wire should be cut to approximately 1 inch long. Use wire strippers to cut the green wire. Then, strip all remaining wires approximately 5/8 of an inch. Place the wire strippers on the wire, close them, rock back and forth, and strip the insulation.
  6. Connect the Ground Wire: After stripping all wires, take the faceplate and loosen all terminal screws. The green ground screw is located in the center of the device. Insert the green or ground wire into the wire well of the green/ground screw terminal. Push it in firmly, then use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the terminal clamp securely.
  7. Connect the Neutral Wire: Next, install the white or neutral wire into the wire well of the silver terminal screw. Insert the wire and tighten the terminal screw with a Phillips screwdriver.
  8. Connect Remaining Wires: Connect your remaining three wires (hot wires) by inserting them into their respective wire wells and connecting them to the brass terminals. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten these terminal screws.
  9. Reassemble the Connector: Once all terminations have been made, slide the faceplate into the body housing. You will notice a channel guide on the body housing that lines up perfectly with the faceplate to ensure correct alignment.
  10. Secure the Faceplate: Take a Phillips head screwdriver and tighten the quick screws on the faceplate to secure it to the body housing.
  11. Tighten the Strain Relief: The final step is to tighten the strain relief on the cable. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten down both screws on the strain relief. This secures the cable and prevents accidental dislodgement.

Note on Wire Size: If your wire is larger than the groove on the strain relief, you are able to remove a section of the strain relief to accommodate larger wire sizes.

Operating Instructions

The Leviton 2833 Locking Connector is designed for straightforward operation once properly installed. To use, simply align the connector with a compatible NEMA L23-30R receptacle and insert it. Twist the connector to lock it into place, ensuring a secure and reliable electrical connection. To disconnect, twist the connector in the opposite direction to unlock and then pull it out.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and safe operation of your Leviton 2833 Locking Connector:

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the connector for any signs of physical damage, such as cracks, frayed wires, or discoloration.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the connector clean and free from dust, dirt, and moisture. Use a dry, soft cloth for cleaning. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Connection Integrity: Ensure that the connection to the cable remains tight and secure. If any screws appear loose, tighten them while ensuring power is off.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the connector in a dry, clean environment away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Leviton 2833 Locking Connector, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Check the circuit breaker to ensure power is on.
    • Verify that the connector is fully and securely inserted into the receptacle.
    • Inspect the wiring connections within the connector to ensure they are tight and correctly terminated (refer to Setup and Installation).
  • Loose Connection:
    • Ensure the locking mechanism is fully engaged by twisting the connector until it clicks into place.
    • Check the strain relief screws to ensure they are tight, preventing cable movement.
  • Overheating:
    • Ensure the connector's amperage rating is not exceeded by the connected load.
    • Verify that all wire connections are tight, as loose connections can cause resistance and heat buildup.

If problems persist after attempting these steps, discontinue use and contact Leviton customer support or a qualified electrician.
