Figure 1: Front panel of the VOLTCRAFT PS-1152A power supply. This image shows the power switch, indicator LED, analog voltmeter, voltage adjustment knob, and output terminals.

Front Panel Components:

  • Power Switch: Toggles the main power to the unit.
  • Power Indicator LED: Illuminates when the unit is powered on.
  • Analog Voltmeter: Displays the output DC voltage.
  • VOLTAGE Adjustment Knob: Used to precisely set the desired output voltage.
  • Output Terminals: Red terminal for positive (+) output, Blue terminal for negative (-) output.

Rear Panel Components:

  • AC Power Input: Connector for the main power cord.
  • Cooling Vents: Ensure these are not obstructed for proper heat dissipation.

4. Setup

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove the power supply from its packaging.
  2. Placement: Place the unit on a stable, level surface. Ensure there is sufficient space around the unit for proper air circulation, especially around the cooling vents.
  3. Power Connection: Connect the supplied AC power cord to the power input on the rear panel of the power supply and then to a suitable grounded wall outlet (230-240V AC).
  4. Initial Check: Before connecting any load, ensure the power supply is off and the voltage adjustment knob is set to its minimum position.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

To turn the power supply on, press the main Power Switch on the front panel. The power indicator LED will illuminate. To turn it off, press the switch again.

5.2 Voltage Adjustment

  1. Ensure no load is connected to the output terminals.
  2. Turn on the power supply.
  3. Rotate the VOLTAGE Adjustment Knob clockwise to increase the output voltage and counter-clockwise to decrease it.
  4. Monitor the analog voltmeter to set the desired output voltage between 1.5V DC and 15V DC.

5.3 Connecting a Load

Always connect your load with the power supply turned off or with the voltage set to its minimum to prevent accidental damage.

  1. Ensure the power supply is off or the voltage is set to minimum.
  2. Connect the positive (+) terminal of your load to the Red Output Terminal.
  3. Connect the negative (-) terminal of your load to the Blue Output Terminal.
  4. Double-check all connections for correct polarity.
  5. Turn on the power supply and slowly adjust the voltage to the required level for your application.

5.4 Current Limit

The VOLTCRAFT PS-1152A has a built-in current limit that varies with the output voltage (1.5A at lower voltages, decreasing to 1A at 15V). If the connected load attempts to draw more current than the power supply can provide at the set voltage, the output voltage will automatically drop to maintain the current limit. This protects both the power supply and the connected device.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

To clean the exterior of the power supply, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or any liquids that could enter the unit. Ensure the power supply is disconnected from the mains before cleaning.

6.2 Storage

When not in use, store the power supply in a dry, dust-free environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep the original packaging for safe storage and transport if possible.

6.3 Ventilation

Regularly check that the cooling vents on the unit are free from dust and obstructions to ensure proper airflow and prevent overheating.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Power:
    • Check if the power cord is securely connected to both the power supply and the wall outlet.
    • Verify that the wall outlet is functional by plugging in another device.
    • Ensure the main power switch on the front panel is in the 'ON' position.
  • No Output Voltage:
    • Confirm the power supply is turned on and the power indicator LED is lit.
    • Check the output connections to the load for proper contact.
    • Ensure the voltage adjustment knob is not set to its minimum position.
    • If a load is connected, temporarily disconnect it to see if the voltage returns. A short-circuited load can cause the voltage to drop to zero.
  • Output Voltage Drops Under Load:
    • This indicates that the connected load is drawing more current than the power supply can deliver at the set voltage.
    • Verify the current requirements of your load and compare them with the power supply's specifications (1.5A-1A).
    • Consider using a power supply with a higher current rating if your application requires more current.
