2. Initial Setup

2.1. Battery Installation and Charging

The DMC-ZS7 uses a rechargeable battery. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located at the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the battery with the correct orientation, matching the arrows on the battery and compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.
  4. Connect the camera to the charger using the provided USB cable and power adapter. The charging indicator will illuminate.
  5. Charging is complete when the indicator light turns off.

2.2. Memory Card Insertion

The camera supports SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. A memory card is required to store photos and videos.

  1. Open the memory card slot cover, usually located near the battery compartment.
  2. Insert the memory card with the label facing the correct direction, gently pushing until it clicks into place.
  3. Close the memory card slot cover.

2.3. Initial Power On and Settings

After installing the battery and memory card, power on the camera.

  1. Slide the ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
  2. The camera will prompt you to set the date, time, and time zone. Follow the on-screen instructions using the directional buttons and SET button.

3. Operating the Camera

3.1. Basic Photography

To take a still picture:

  1. Turn the mode dial to the desired shooting mode (e.g., Intelligent Auto for automatic settings).
  2. Frame your subject using the 3.0-inch LCD screen.
  3. Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The focus frame will turn green when focus is achieved.
  4. Press the shutter button fully down to take the picture.

3.2. Zoom Functionality

The camera features a 12x optical zoom and an extended 16x Intelligent Zoom (up to 23.4x Extra Optical Zoom at 3-megapixel resolution or less).

  • Use the zoom lever (W/T) located around the shutter button to adjust the focal length.
  • Move the lever towards 'T' (Telephoto) to zoom in on distant subjects.
  • Move the lever towards 'W' (Wide) to zoom out and capture a wider scene.

3.3. Optical Image Stabilization

The camera is equipped with optical image stabilization to reduce blur caused by camera shake, especially useful when zooming in or in low light conditions. This feature operates automatically in most shooting modes.

3.4. Video Recording (AVCHD Lite HD)

The DMC-ZS7 can record high-definition motion images in AVCHD Lite format (1920 x 1080 pixels, 60i).

  1. Press the dedicated movie recording button to start recording.
  2. Press the movie recording button again to stop recording.
  3. The 12x optical zoom is available during video recording.

3.5. GPS Functionality

The built-in GPS unit allows the camera to record location data (country, state, city, landmark) with your photos and videos.

  • Turn on the GPS function in the camera's menu.
  • Location data and time will be automatically updated and embedded in your media files.
  • You can view geo-tagged photos/videos by place names on the camera or using the PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.1 HD Edition software on a computer.

3.6. Playback Modes

To review your photos and videos:

  1. Press the playback button (usually indicated by a play icon).
  2. Use the directional buttons to navigate through your images and videos.
  3. Press the SET button to view options or play videos.

3.7. Connecting to a TV

You can connect your DMC-ZS7 to a TV using an HDMI cable (optional RP-CDHM15/CDHM30 mini HDMI cable recommended) to view your media on a larger screen.

  1. Ensure both the camera and TV are turned off.
  2. Connect one end of the mini HDMI cable to the camera's HDMI output terminal.
  3. Connect the other end to an HDMI input terminal on your TV.
  4. Turn on the TV and select the correct HDMI input.
  5. Turn on the camera. The camera's display will switch to the TV screen.

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning the Camera

  • Camera Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with water and then dry thoroughly. Avoid using organic solvents.
  • Lens: Use a lens brush to remove dust, then gently wipe with a lens cleaning cloth. Avoid touching the lens surface with your fingers.
  • LCD Screen: Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid pressing hard on the screen.

4.2. Battery Care

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures.
  • Do not short-circuit the battery terminals.

4.3. Memory Card Handling

  • Always format new memory cards in the camera before first use.
  • Do not remove the memory card while the camera is writing or reading data.

    Ensure the memory card has sufficient write speed for HD video (Class 4 or higher recommended). Check available memory space.
