Powerwinch Model 712 Marine Trailer Winch and included accessories

Image Description: This image displays the Powerwinch Model 712 Marine Trailer Winch unit along with its accompanying accessories. The main winch unit is black with a blue and white Powerwinch label, featuring a steel cable wound around its drum and a hook attached. To the right, a coil of red and black electrical wiring with a fuse holder is visible. Below the winch, various mounting hardware components are laid out, including bolts, nuts, washers, two flat metal mounting plates, a golden pulley/block, a separate shackle-style hook, and a metal hand crank/handle.

  • Powerwinch Model 712 Winch Unit with pre-installed steel cable and hook
  • Electrical Wiring Harness (red and black cables with 60 amp fuse)
  • Mounting Hardware (bolts, nuts, washers, mounting plates)
  • Hand Crank
  • Pulley/Block for double line applications
  • Additional Hook (shackle type)

4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is critical for the safe and effective operation of your winch.

  1. Mounting the Winch: Securely attach the winch unit to the trailer frame using the provided mounting hardware. Ensure the mounting surface is strong enough to withstand the pulling forces. Use all bolts, nuts, and washers as instructed.
  2. Electrical Connection: Connect the 60 amp standard wiring harness to your boat's battery or a dedicated power source. Ensure proper polarity (red to positive, black to negative) and that all connections are tight and corrosion-free. The fuse should be installed in the positive line as close to the power source as possible.
  3. Cable Inspection: Before first use, unspool the cable and inspect it for any kinks, frays, or damage. Ensure the cable is properly seated on the drum.

5. Operation

The Powerwinch Model 712 features remote power-in and free-wheel out operation.

  1. Engaging the Winch: Use the remote control to activate the power-in function, which will retract the cable and pull the boat onto the trailer.
  2. Free-Wheel Out: To release the cable, engage the free-wheel out function. This allows the cable to be manually pulled out from the drum.
  3. Using the Pulley/Block: For situations requiring increased pulling power, utilize the provided pulley or block at the bow eye of the boat. This doubles the pulling force, effectively increasing the line capacity.
  4. Manual Operation: In case of power failure or for fine adjustments, the hand crank can be used to manually operate the winch.

Important: The maximum boat weight capacity is 7,500 lbs. The vertical lift capacity is 2,400 lbs for a single line and 4,300 lbs for a double line application (using the pulley block). Do not exceed these limits.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your winch.

  • Cable Inspection: Periodically inspect the entire length of the winch cable for signs of wear, fraying, kinks, or corrosion. Replace the cable if any damage is observed.
  • Hook and Connections: Check the winch hook and all electrical connections for damage, corrosion, or looseness. Tighten or replace as necessary.
  • Cleaning: Keep the winch unit clean and free of dirt, salt, and debris. Rinse with fresh water after use in marine environments and allow to dry.
  • Lubrication: Consult the manufacturer's guidelines for any recommended lubrication points.
  • Mounting Hardware: Regularly check that all mounting bolts are tight and secure.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Powerwinch Model 712, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Winch Not Operating:
    • Check battery connections for tightness and corrosion.
    • Verify the 60 amp fuse is intact. Replace if blown.
    • Ensure the remote control is functioning and properly connected.
  • Winch Pulling Weakly:
    • Confirm the battery is fully charged.
    • Inspect electrical connections for resistance or corrosion.
    • Ensure the load does not exceed the winch's capacity. Consider using the pulley block for double line applications.
  • Cable Issues (Kinking, Fraying):
    • Immediately cease operation.
    • Replace the damaged cable before further use.
