Setup and Installation

Installation typically requires only a Phillips head screwdriver. Follow these general steps:

  1. Prepare the Door: Ensure your door has standard bore holes (typically 2-1/8" diameter) and a backset of either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4". The Kwikset 660 is designed for doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick.
  2. Install the Latch: Insert the adjustable latch into the door edge. Ensure the "UP" arrow on the latch is pointing upwards. Twist the latch housing to adjust the backset if necessary. Secure with two small screws.
  3. Install Exterior Cylinder: Place the exterior keyed cylinder assembly through the bore hole from the outside of the door. Ensure the tailpiece (the flat bar extending from the back of the cylinder) is horizontal.
  4. Install Interior Turn Piece: Align the interior turn piece assembly with the exterior cylinder. The tailpiece from the exterior cylinder should slide into the slot on the interior assembly. Secure the interior assembly to the exterior assembly using the two long mounting screws. Tighten evenly to prevent binding.
  5. Install Strike Plate: Install the strike plate on the door frame, aligning it with the deadbolt latch. Secure with two screws.
  6. Test Operation: Close the door and test the deadbolt operation using both the key from the outside and the turn-button from the inside. The bolt should extend and retract smoothly without resistance.

SmartKey Re-keying Procedure

The SmartKey Re-key Technology allows you to re-key your lock to a new Kwikset key in three simple steps:

  1. Insert Current Key: Insert your currently working key fully into the cylinder and turn it 90 degrees clockwise to the horizontal locked position.
  2. Insert SmartKey Tool: While the current key is still in the locked position, insert the SmartKey Re-key Tool firmly and fully into the small hole next to the keyway. You will feel a slight click. Remove the SmartKey Tool.
  3. Insert New Key: Remove the current key. Insert your new Kwikset key fully into the cylinder and turn it 180 degrees counter-clockwise to the unlocked position. Then turn it 90 degrees clockwise back to the locked position. Remove the new key. Your lock is now re-keyed to the new key.

Important: Always test the new key with the door open first to ensure proper re-keying before closing and locking the door.
