Getting Started: Initial Setup
1. Unpacking and Checking Contents
Verify that all items listed below are included in your package:
- Nikon Coolpix S3000 Digital Camera
- EN-EL10 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
- EH-68P AC Adapter/Charger
- UC-E6 USB Cable
- EG-CP14 Audio Video Cable
- AN-CP19 Strap
- Coolpix Software Suite CD-ROM
2. Charging the Battery
The supplied EN-EL10 battery must be charged before first use. Insert the battery into the camera and connect the camera to the EH-68P AC Adapter/Charger using the UC-E6 USB cable. The charging indicator will illuminate during charging and turn off when complete. A full charge typically takes approximately 2 hours.
Note: The camera does not feature a visible battery status indicator on the screen. It is recommended to fully charge the battery before important shooting sessions. Charging occurs while the battery is inside the camera.
3. Inserting the Battery and Memory Card
Open the battery/card chamber cover on the bottom of the camera. Insert the fully charged EN-EL10 battery with the correct orientation. Insert an SD or SDHC memory card into the designated slot until it clicks into place. Close the cover securely.
4. Setting Date and Time
Upon first power-on, or after the battery has been removed for an extended period, the date and time settings may need to be configured. Follow the on-screen prompts to set the correct date, time, and time zone. This ensures accurate timestamps on your photos.
Operating the Camera
1. Power On/Off
Press the Power button located on the top of the camera to turn it on or off. The lens will extend when powered on and retract when powered off.

- Turn on the camera. The camera will default to Auto Mode.
- Frame your shot using the 2.7-inch LCD monitor.
- Press the shutter-release button halfway down to focus. The focus indicator will appear.
- Press the shutter-release button fully down to take the picture.
3. Using the Zoom
Use the zoom control lever (located around the shutter button) to adjust the focal length. Push it towards 'W' for wide-angle (zooming out) and 'T' for telephoto (zooming in). The camera features a 4x optical zoom and a 2x digital zoom.
4. Flash Modes
Press the flash button (usually marked with a lightning bolt icon) to cycle through available flash modes: Auto, Fill-flash, Slow sync, and Red-eye reduction. Select the appropriate mode for your lighting conditions.
5. Viewing and Deleting Pictures

Advanced Features
1. Scene Auto Selector and Scene Modes
The Coolpix S3000 features an intelligent Scene Auto Selector that automatically analyzes the subject and its surroundings to select the most appropriate scene mode from Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Close-up, or Backlight. You can also manually select from 16 scene modes via the menu for specific shooting conditions.
2. Smart Portrait System
This system enhances portrait photography:
- Face-priority AF: Automatically detects up to 12 faces and adjusts focus and exposure.
- Smile Timer: Automatically releases the shutter when the subject smiles.
- Blink Proof: Takes two sequential frames and saves the one where the subject's eyes are open.
- In-Camera Red-Eye Fix: Automatically corrects red-eye effect before saving the image.
3. Subject Tracking
Subject Tracking allows the camera to automatically detect and follow a moving subject, maintaining focus. This is particularly useful for capturing children or pets in motion, even if they temporarily move out of the frame.
4. Movie Recording
The camera can record movies at 640 x 480 resolution at 30 frames per second (fps) with sound. To start recording, switch to movie mode (if available via a dedicated button or menu option) and press the shutter-release button. Recording stops automatically after 29 minutes or when the file size reaches 2 GB.
5. Image Stabilization (4-way VR System)
The 4-way Image Stabilization System helps reduce blur in photos:
- Electronic VR (Vibration Reduction): Compensates for camera shake.
- Motion Detection: Automatically adjusts shutter speed and ISO to compensate for subject movement and camera shake.
- ISO 3200 Capability: Allows for faster shutter speeds in low light or when capturing fast-moving subjects.
- BSS (Best Shot Selector): Automatically shoots a series of frames and saves the sharpest one.
6. D-Lighting and Quick Retouch
These in-camera features allow for basic image enhancements after shooting. D-Lighting brightens dark areas of an image without affecting brighter areas, while Quick Retouch enhances contrast and saturation for a more vibrant look.
Connecting to a Computer
To transfer photos and videos to your computer, use the supplied UC-E6 USB cable. Connect the camera to a USB port on your computer. The camera will appear as a removable disk drive, allowing you to copy files. The included Coolpix Software Suite CD-ROM contains software for managing and editing your images.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Camera
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the camera body.
- For the lens, use a lens brush or a blower to remove dust, then gently wipe with a lens cleaning cloth. Avoid touching the lens surface with your fingers.
- Clean the LCD monitor with a soft, dry cloth.
2. Battery Care
- Always use the genuine Nikon EN-EL10 battery and EH-68P charger.
- Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Do not expose batteries to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.
3. Storage
