Installation Instructions

Follow these steps carefully for proper installation:

  1. Prepare the Water Heater:
    • Turn off the water supply to the water heater at the main shut-off valve.
    • Turn off the power supply (electricity or gas) to the water heater.
    • Drain the water heater completely. Refer to your water heater's manual for specific draining instructions.
  2. Remove Old Connectors (if applicable):
    • Carefully disconnect and remove any existing water heater connectors. Be prepared for residual water.
  3. Inspect the Watts FFSS12-R Connector:

Examine the connector for any signs of damage or manufacturing defects before installation.

  4. Connect to Water Heater:
    • Apply a suitable thread sealant (e.g., PTFE tape or pipe dope) to the male threads of the water heater's inlet and outlet ports.
    • Hand-tighten one end of the Watts FFSS12-R connector to the water heater's cold water inlet (typically marked blue or 'C').
    • Hand-tighten the other Watts FFSS12-R connector (or the other end of the same connector if only one is used for both hot/cold, though typically two are used) to the water heater's hot water outlet (typically marked red or 'H').
    • Using a wrench, tighten each connection an additional 1/2 to 1 full turn past hand-tight. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the threads or the connector.
  5. Connect to House Plumbing:
    • Apply thread sealant to the male threads of the house's cold and hot water supply lines.
    • Connect the remaining ends of the Watts FFSS12-R connectors to the corresponding cold and hot water supply lines.
    • Hand-tighten, then use a wrench to tighten an additional 1/2 to 1 full turn.
  6. Check for Leaks:
    • Slowly turn on the main water supply.
    • Open a hot water faucet in your home to allow air to escape from the water heater and pipes. Once water flows steadily, close the faucet.
    • Carefully inspect all connections for leaks. If a leak is detected, turn off the water supply, drain the system slightly, and re-tighten the leaking connection. Do not overtighten.
  7. Restore Power:
    • Once all connections are secure and leak-free, restore power (electricity or gas) to the water heater.
    • Allow the water heater to fill and heat up according to its manufacturer's instructions.

Operation

The Watts FFSS12-R connector is a passive component designed to provide a flexible and secure connection between your water heater and the plumbing system. Once installed correctly, it operates continuously without user intervention. Its corrugated design allows for slight movement and vibration without compromising the seal, while the built-in dielectric sleeve helps prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is minimal for this product, but periodic inspection is recommended:

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Leak at connection pointsLoose connection, insufficient thread sealant, damaged washer.Shut off water supply. Drain system. Re-tighten connection (do not overtighten). Apply more thread sealant. Inspect and replace washer if damaged.
Reduced water flowKinked connector (unlikely with corrugated design), debris in line (not typically connector issue).Inspect connector for kinks. If no kinks, check other plumbing components for blockages.
Corrosion around connectionsGalvanic corrosion (if dielectric sleeve is compromised or not present), external chemical exposure.Ensure proper dielectric isolation. Clean affected area. If severe, consider replacement.

If you encounter issues not listed here or cannot resolve a problem, contact a qualified plumbing professional.
