Setup and Installation

Before beginning installation, ensure power is OFF at the circuit breaker.

Tools Required:

  • Screwdriver (Phillips or flathead, depending on mounting screws)
  • Wire strippers
  • Electrical tape (optional, for added insulation)
  • Voltage tester

Installation Steps:

  1. Disconnect Power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse controlling the fixture where the lampholder will be installed and turn off the power. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Prepare Wiring: If replacing an existing lampholder, carefully disconnect the old unit. Strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the electrical wires (typically black for hot, white for neutral, and green/bare for ground).
  3. Connect Wires: The Leviton 8756 is back-wired. Insert the stripped ends of the wires into the appropriate terminals on the back of the lampholder. Ensure a secure connection by tightening the terminal screws.
    • Connect the hot wire (usually black) to the brass-colored screw terminal.
    • Connect the neutral wire (usually white) to the silver-colored screw terminal.
    • Connect the ground wire (green or bare copper) to the green ground screw terminal (if present on the fixture or mounting box).
  4. Mount Lampholder: Secure the lampholder to the fixture or mounting box using the provided #2 or #8-32 mounting screws. Ensure it is firmly attached and stable.
  5. Install Lamp: Carefully screw the Mogul Base (E39/E40) HID lamp into the lampholder until it is snug. Do not overtighten.
  6. Restore Power: Once installation is complete and all connections are secure, restore power at the circuit breaker.

Operating Instructions

The Leviton 8756 lampholder is a passive component designed to hold and provide electrical connection to a Mogul Base HID lamp. Its operation is dependent on the connected lighting fixture and power supply.

  • Once installed and wired correctly, the lampholder will provide power to the lamp when the circuit is energized.
  • To turn the lamp ON or OFF, use the switch or control mechanism of the lighting fixture it is installed in.
  • This lampholder is keyless, meaning it does not have an integrated switch.
  • Ensure the lamp is fully seated in the lampholder for proper electrical contact.

Maintenance

The Leviton 8756 lampholder requires minimal maintenance due to its durable porcelain construction.

  • Cleaning: Periodically, with power disconnected, wipe the exterior of the lampholder with a dry, clean cloth to remove dust or debris. Do not use liquid cleaners directly on the lampholder.
  • Inspection: Annually, or as needed, inspect the lampholder for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the porcelain, discoloration, or loose wire connections. If any damage is observed, disconnect power and replace the lampholder immediately.
  • Lamp Replacement: Always disconnect power before replacing a lamp. Allow the lamp to cool completely before handling.
