2. Setup
The Proskit 6PK-214 IDC Crimp Tool is ready for immediate use upon unboxing. No assembly is required. Before each use, perform a visual inspection of the tool to ensure there is no visible damage, wear, or foreign objects that could impede its function.
3. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for proper crimping of IDC-type connectors:
- Prepare Cable: Ensure the flat ribbon cable is properly stripped according to the connector's specifications.
- Insert Cable into Connector: Carefully insert the stripped cable into the IDC connector. Verify that the cable is fully seated to the end of the connector, aligning all wires correctly.
- Position Connector in Tool: Place the IDC connector, with the cable inserted, into the designated holder of the crimp tool. Ensure the connector is stable and correctly aligned within the tool's jaws. The tool is designed for connectors with a height range of 6mm to 27.5mm.
- Crimp Connector: Firmly and steadily squeeze the handles of the tool together until the crimping action is complete. The tool will apply even pressure to properly seat the cable into the IDC connector.
- Remove Crimped Connector: Release the handles and carefully remove the newly crimped connector from the tool. Inspect the connection for proper seating and integrity.
This tool is suitable for use with 26-, 28-, and 29-series IDC male headers or female sockets commonly found in PC accessories.
4. Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe the tool clean with a dry cloth to remove any dust, debris, or residue.
- Storage: Store the tool in a dry environment to prevent rust and corrosion. Keep it away from excessive moisture and extreme temperatures.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a light machine oil to the pivot points and moving parts to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the crimping jaws for any signs of wear, damage, or misalignment. Replace the tool if significant wear is observed to maintain crimp quality.
5. Troubleshooting
- Poor Crimp Quality:
- Ensure the cable is properly stripped and fully inserted into the connector.
- Verify the connector is correctly seated and aligned within the tool's holder.
- Check if the crimping distance of the connector falls within the tool's specified range (6mm-27.5mm).
- Tool Jams or Sticks:
- Do not force the handles. Release pressure and inspect the jaws for any obstructions or debris.
- Ensure the tool is clean and lubricated at its pivot points.
- Difficulty in Removing Crimped Connector:
- Ensure the handles are fully released after crimping.
- Gently wiggle the connector to free it from the tool's holder.
