Setup

1. Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment door on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Slide the latch to open the door.
  3. Insert the AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment door firmly until it latches securely.

2. Memory Card Installation

The camera supports SD and SDHC memory cards (not included).

  1. Open the memory card slot cover, usually located near the battery compartment.
  2. Insert the SD/SDHC card with the metal contacts facing the correct direction, as shown by the diagram near the slot.
  3. Push the card gently until it clicks into place.
  4. Close the memory card slot cover.

3. Attaching the Neck Strap

Thread the neck strap through the strap lugs on the camera body as per the instructions provided with the strap. Ensure it is securely fastened to prevent accidental drops.

4. Attaching the Lens Cap

Place the lens cap onto the front of the lens when the camera is not in use to protect the lens from dust and scratches. Remember to remove it before powering on the camera to avoid error messages.

5. Initial Power On

Press the Power button to turn on the camera. The LCD screen will illuminate, and the lens will extend. Follow any on-screen prompts for initial setup, such as setting the date and time.

Operating the Camera

Photography Modes

Rotate the mode dial on the top of the camera to select your desired shooting mode:

Taking Pictures

  1. Framing: Use the 3-inch LCD screen or the electronic viewfinder to compose your shot.
  2. Zoom: Use the zoom lever (W/T) to adjust the 26x optical zoom for wide-angle or telephoto shots. The camera also features 5x digital zoom.
  3. Focusing: Press the shutter button halfway down to activate autofocus. The camera will focus on the subject, and a focus indicator will appear. The camera supports multi-area, center, and spot autofocus.
  4. Shutter Release: Press the shutter button fully to capture the image. A vertical shutter release is also available for comfortable vertical shooting.
  5. Flash: Adjust flash settings (Auto, On, Off, Slow Synch, Rear Curtain Synch) via the camera menu or dedicated button.
  6. White Balance: Select appropriate white balance settings (Auto, Daylight, Flash, Shade, Tungsten) to ensure accurate color reproduction.
  7. Self-Timer: Activate the 16-second self-timer for delayed shots.

Video Recording

The Kodak EasyShare Z981 can record HD 720p video in AVC format.

  1. Switch the mode dial to the video recording icon.
  2. Press the dedicated video record button to start recording.
  3. Press the button again to stop recording.

Reviewing Images and Videos

Press the Review button (often indicated by a play icon) to view your captured photos and videos on the LCD screen. Use the navigation buttons to scroll through your media.

Sharing Content

Utilize the dedicated Share button to easily tag pictures for upload to platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, and Kodak Gallery sites, or for emailing, once the camera is connected to a computer with Kodak EasyShare software.

Troubleshooting

"Lens Cap On" error.Remove the lens cap before turning on the camera.

Camera operates slowly.A full memory card or a slow memory card can affect performance. Try a different, faster SDHC card.

Autofocus focuses on wrong object.In scenes with foreground objects, the camera may focus on the closer element. Try using spot focus or manual focus if available.
