Setup and Preparation

  1. Read Instructions: Before beginning any tests, carefully read all instructions provided on the instruction card and reagent labels.
  2. Collect Water Sample: Submerge the comparator into the pool or spa water to collect a sample. Ensure the water level reaches the molded fill lines in the comparator cells.
  3. Rinse Comparator: Always rinse the comparator cells thoroughly with the water to be tested before collecting the sample to ensure accurate results.
  4. Prepare Reagents: Ensure all reagent bottles are securely capped when not in use. Store them in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.

Operating Instructions: Performing Tests

Follow these steps for each specific test. Refer to the instruction card for precise drop counts and color charts.

1. Free & Total Chlorine / Bromine Test

  1. Fill the comparator cell labeled "Cl Br" to the molded fill line with the water sample.
  2. Add the specified number of DPD #1 and DPD #2 reagents (usually 5 drops each) to the cell.
  3. Cap the cell and invert several times to mix (DO NOT SHAKE).
  4. Immediately compare the color to the Free Chlorine color standards on the comparator. Record the result.
  5. For Total Chlorine, add the specified number of DPD #3 reagent (usually 5 drops) to the same cell.
  6. Cap and invert to mix. Wait 2 minutes.
  7. Compare the color to the Total Chlorine color standards. Record the result.
  8. To calculate Combined Chlorine, subtract Free Chlorine from Total Chlorine (TC - FC = CC).
  9. For Bromine, multiply the Free Chlorine reading by 2.25.

2. pH Test

  1. Fill the comparator cell labeled "pH" to the molded fill line with the water sample.
  2. Add the specified number of Phenol Red reagent (usually 5 drops) to the cell.
  3. Cap the cell and invert several times to mix (DO NOT SHAKE).
  4. Compare the color to the pH color standards on the comparator. Record the result.

3. Acid Demand Test (if pH is high)

  1. Use the same pH sample if the pH reading was above 7.8.
  2. Add Acid Demand Reagent drop by drop, inverting after each drop, until the color matches the 7.4 pH standard.
  3. Count the number of drops added. Refer to the instruction card's dosage chart to determine the amount of acid needed.

4. Total Alkalinity Test

  1. Fill a clean comparator cell to the molded fill line with the water sample.
  2. Add the specified number of Total Alkalinity Reagent (usually 5 drops) to the cell.
  3. Cap the cell and invert several times to mix.
  4. Compare the color to the Total Alkalinity color standards. Record the result.

Maintenance

  • Clean Comparator: After each use, thoroughly rinse the comparator cells with clean tap water. Do not use detergents or abrasive cleaners, as they can affect future test results.
  • Store Reagents Properly: Keep all reagent bottles tightly capped and stored in the original kit case. Store the kit in a cool, dark, and dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Check Expiration Dates: Reagents have a shelf life. Check the expiration dates on the bottles and replace expired reagents to ensure accurate readings. Replacement reagents are available separately.
  • Handle with Care: Avoid dropping the kit or exposing it to harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic components.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Inaccurate ReadingsExpired reagents, contaminated comparator, improper sample collection, incorrect drop count.Replace expired reagents. Rinse comparator thoroughly. Collect sample at elbow depth away from jets. Ensure correct number of drops.
Color Does Not Match ChartHigh chemical levels, insufficient mixing, lighting conditions. If levels are extremely high, dilute sample with distilled water and retest (remember to multiply result). Ensure proper mixing. Compare colors in natural daylight, not direct sunlight.
Reagent Bottle CloggedCrystallization of reagent.Gently tap the bottle. If persistent, clear the dropper tip with a clean, thin wire or replace the reagent.
