2. Kit Contents
Your Taylor K-1001 Test Kit includes the following components, designed for convenience and accuracy:

Image: All components of the Taylor K-1001 Test Kit, including the comparator, reagent bottles, and instruction manual.
- Comparator: A clear plastic block with color standards for Chlorine/Bromine and pH.
- Reagents:
- DPD Reagent #1 (R-0001): For Free Chlorine and Bromine tests.
- DPD Reagent #2 (R-0002): For Free Chlorine and Bromine tests.
- pH Indicator Solution (R-0004): For pH tests.
- Hard Shell Case: A durable blue case for storing all kit components securely.
- Instruction Card/Booklet: Provides detailed testing procedures and dosage charts.
3. Setup and Preparation
Before performing any tests, ensure your kit is properly set up and ready for use.
- Unpack the Kit: Carefully remove all components from the hard shell case.
- Familiarize Yourself: Review the instruction card or booklet to understand the testing procedures and dosage charts.
- Check Reagents: Ensure all reagent bottles are securely capped and stored in a cool, dark place when not in use. Reagents should be replaced annually for optimal accuracy.
- Clean Equipment: Rinse the comparator tubes thoroughly with the water to be tested before each use to prevent contamination.
4. Operating Instructions: Water Testing Procedures
Follow these steps for accurate testing of your pool or spa water. Always read the specific instructions on the kit's lid or instruction booklet for detailed guidance.

4.1. Free Chlorine (FC) / Bromine (Br) Test
- Rinse and Fill: Rinse the small comparator tube to the 9 mL mark with the water to be tested. Fill the tube to the 9 mL mark with the water sample.
- Add Reagents: Add 5 drops of R-0001 (DPD Reagent #1) and 5 drops of R-0002 (DPD Reagent #2) to the tube.
- Cap and Invert: Cap the tube and invert several times to mix the reagents with the water sample.
- Match Color: Immediately compare the color of the water sample to the color standards on the comparator. Record the result as parts per million (ppm) Free Chlorine (FC) or Bromine (Br).
- Bromine Conversion: If testing for Bromine, multiply the Free Chlorine reading by 2.25 to obtain the Bromine reading.
4.2. pH Test
- Rinse and Fill: Rinse the large comparator tube to the 44 mL mark with the water to be tested. Fill the tube to the 44 mL mark with the water sample.
- Add Reagent: Add 5 drops of R-0004 (pH Indicator Solution) to the tube.
- Cap and Invert: Cap the tube and invert several times to mix the reagent with the water sample.
- Match Color: Compare the color of the water sample to the pH color standards on the comparator. Record the pH unit.
- Adjustments: If the sample color is between two values, pH is the average of the two. Refer to the dosage charts in the instruction booklet for guidance on how to lower or raise pH using appropriate chemicals.
4.3. Dosage Charts
The instruction card includes detailed dosage charts (e.g., Table D for increasing pH using Soda Ash, Table E for decreasing pH using Muriatic Acid). These charts provide specific quantities of chemicals needed based on your test results and pool/spa volume to achieve desired water balance. Always consult these charts before adding any chemicals.
5. Maintenance and Storage
Proper care and storage will extend the life and accuracy of your test kit.
- Clean After Each Use: Rinse all comparator tubes thoroughly with clean water immediately after each test. Invert tubes to dry.
- Store Kit Properly: Always store the test kit in its hard shell case in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures (ideally between 36°F and 85°F).
- Replace Reagents: Reagents have a limited shelf life. For best accuracy, replace reagents at least once a year, or as indicated on the bottle labels.
- Keep Out of Reach: Store the kit and all chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your test results, consider the following:
- Off-Scale Readings: If a test result is "off-scale" (e.g., color is too dark or too light to match the comparator), it indicates a very high or very low concentration.
- For high readings, dilute your water sample with distilled water (e.g., 1 part sample to 1 part distilled water) and retest. Multiply your final reading by the dilution factor.
- For very low readings, ensure proper chemical levels are maintained and retest after a period.
- Inaccurate Results:
- Ensure reagents are not expired and have been stored correctly.
- Verify that the comparator tubes are clean and free of residue.
- Collect water samples from at least 18 inches below the surface and away from return jets.
- Ensure proper mixing of reagents by inverting the capped tube.
