Introduction
The Intermatic PE153P is a versatile 3-circuit digital timer designed for automatic control of electrical loads. This 24-hour control mechanism allows for precise scheduling of various applications, including lighting, heating, air conditioning, and pool or spa pumps. Each circuit can manage loads up to 17 amps. This manual provides essential information for the safe installation, programming, operation, and maintenance of your PE153P digital timer.

Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury:
- Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician and in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
- Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installing or servicing the timer.
- Ensure the timer is properly grounded.
- Do not exceed the maximum load ratings for each circuit (17 amps).
- This device is intended for outdoor use and is housed in a rainproof enclosure. Ensure the enclosure is securely closed after installation and servicing.
Installation and Setup
Mounting the Enclosure
- Select a suitable location for mounting the timer. The location should be easily accessible for programming and maintenance, and protected from direct sunlight if possible to prolong LCD life.
- Use appropriate mounting hardware (not included) to secure the enclosure to a flat, vertical surface. Ensure the enclosure is level.
Wiring Instructions
WARNING: Disconnect power at the main service panel before wiring. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.
- Open the timer enclosure.
- Identify the input terminals (LINE 1, LINE 2, NEUTRAL) and output terminals for each of the three circuits (LOAD 1, LOAD 2, LOAD 3).
- Connect the incoming power supply wires to the appropriate input terminals. For 120V operation, connect LINE 1 and NEUTRAL. For 240V operation, connect LINE 1 and LINE 2.
- Connect the load wires for each device you wish to control to the corresponding output terminals.
- Ensure all wire connections are tight and secure. Use copper conductors only, rated for at least 75°C.
- Close and secure the enclosure door.
Operating Instructions
Initial Power-Up and Time Setting
- Restore power to the timer at the main service panel.
- The LCD display will illuminate. If the display is blank, check power connections.
- Press the PROGRAM button to enter programming mode.
- Use the UP and DOWN arrows to set the current time (hour and minute).
- Press ENTER to confirm each setting.
- Set the current day of the week using the UP and DOWN arrows, then press ENTER.
Programming Schedules
The PE153P offers seven preprogrammed modes and custom programming. Refer to the detailed programming section in the full manual for advanced settings.
- Press PROGRAM repeatedly to cycle through the available circuits (CIRCUIT 1, CIRCUIT 2, CIRCUIT 3).
- Once the desired circuit is selected, press ENTER to begin setting ON/OFF times.
- Use UP and DOWN arrows to set the ON time, then press ENTER.
- Repeat for the OFF time.
- Select the days of the week for this schedule to be active.
- Press PROGRAM to save and exit, or to move to the next program event.
Manual Override
To manually turn a circuit ON or OFF outside of its programmed schedule, press the corresponding OVERRIDE button for that circuit. The override will remain active until the next programmed event or until manually cancelled.
Maintenance
The Intermatic PE153P digital timer requires minimal maintenance. Periodically inspect the enclosure for any signs of damage or wear. Ensure the door seal is intact to maintain its rainproof rating. Keep the display and buttons clean and free of debris. No user-serviceable parts are inside the sealed unit beyond the wiring terminals.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Display is blank. | No power to the unit. | Check circuit breaker/fuse. Verify wiring connections. |
| Load does not turn ON/OFF as programmed. | Incorrect programming; Manual override active; Faulty wiring; Load exceeding capacity. | Review programming schedule. Check for active manual override. Inspect wiring. Ensure load is within 17A per circuit. |
| Time is incorrect. | Time not set correctly; Power interruption. | Reset current time and day. The internal battery should maintain time during short power outages. |
If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact Intermatic customer support.
