4. Setup and Installation
The Intermatic PX300S transformer is designed for surface mounting. Ensure the mounting location is secure, dry, and allows for proper ventilation. All wiring must comply with national and local electrical codes.
4.1 Mounting
- Select a suitable mounting surface that can support the weight of the transformer (approximately 10.4 lbs).
- Mount the transformer at least 12 inches (30 cm) above ground level.
- Use appropriate fasteners to secure the transformer to the wall or mounting surface via the pre-drilled holes at the top and bottom of the enclosure.
4.2 Wiring Connections
The transformer features 10 combination knockouts for wiring entry. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
- Input (Primary) Wiring: Connect the 120 VAC, 60 Hz power supply to the designated input terminals.
- Output (Secondary) Wiring: Connect your low-voltage lighting fixtures to the output terminals. The PX300S offers 12V, 13V, and 14V output options. Select the appropriate voltage tap based on your lighting requirements and cable run length to ensure optimal light performance.
- Grounding: Properly ground the transformer enclosure as per electrical codes.
5. Operation
Once properly installed and wired, the Intermatic PX300S transformer operates automatically. It converts standard 120 VAC household current to a safe low voltage (12-14 VAC) suitable for pool/spa and landscape lighting.
- The built-in circuit protection will automatically disconnect power if an overload occurs. This is a safety feature to protect the transformer and connected fixtures.
- After an overload, the internal protector will open. Allow approximately 15 minutes for the unit to cool and reset before attempting to restore power. Identify and correct the cause of the overload before re-energizing.
6. Maintenance
The Intermatic PX300S transformer is designed for minimal maintenance. Regular inspection can help ensure long-term performance.
- Periodically inspect the enclosure for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Keep the area around the transformer clear of debris to ensure proper ventilation.
- Clean the exterior of the unit with a soft, damp cloth as needed. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ensure the lid is securely fastened at all times to maintain its rainproof integrity.
7. Troubleshooting
If your Intermatic PX300S transformer is not functioning as expected, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power output to lights | Overload detected by internal protector | Disconnect power, wait 15 minutes for reset. Reduce load or fix short circuit. |
| Lights are dim | Incorrect voltage tap selected or long cable run causing voltage drop | Verify correct voltage tap (12V, 13V, 14V) for your setup. Consider using a higher voltage tap or thicker gauge wire for longer runs. |
| Transformer humming loudly | Normal operation (slight hum) or loose mounting/components | A slight hum is normal. Ensure the transformer is securely mounted. Check for any loose internal components (qualified personnel only). |
| Enclosure shows signs of rust/corrosion | Exposure to harsh elements or damaged paint | While designed to resist oxidation, extreme conditions can affect it. Clean and apply rust-inhibiting paint if necessary. Ensure lid is sealed. |
If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact a qualified electrician or Intermatic customer support.
