Operating Instructions (Gameplay)
Objective
The objective of Monopoly is to be the last player remaining with money, properties, and assets after all other players have gone bankrupt.
Starting the Game
- Each player rolls both dice. The player with the highest total goes first. In case of a tie, those players roll again.
- Play proceeds to the left (clockwise).
Player's Turn
- Roll the Dice: Roll both dice and move your token clockwise around the board the number of spaces indicated.
- Action Based on Space: The action you take depends on the space your token lands on:
- Unowned Property: You may buy the property from the Bank for the price printed on that space. If you do not wish to buy it, the Banker immediately auctions it to the highest bidder.
- Owned Property: If you land on a property owned by another player, you must pay rent as shown on its Title Deed card.
- Chance or Community Chest: Draw the top card from the respective pile and follow its instructions. Return the card to the bottom of the pile when finished.
- Tax Spaces: Pay the indicated tax to the Bank.
- "GO": If you land on or pass "GO", collect $200 from the Bank.
- "Jail": If you land on "Go to Jail", you immediately move your token to the "In Jail" space. You do not collect $200 for passing GO.
- "Free Parking": This is a "rest" space; no action is required.
- Doubles: If you roll doubles, take your turn as usual, then roll the dice again for another turn. If you roll doubles three times in a row, you immediately go to Jail.
Building and Mortgaging
- Houses and Hotels: Once you own all properties in a color group, you can buy houses and hotels from the Bank and place them on those properties. You must build evenly across the color group.
- Mortgaging: Properties can be mortgaged to the Bank for half their printed value. Mortgaged properties do not collect rent.
Bankruptcy
If you owe more money than you can pay, even by selling houses/hotels and mortgaging properties, you are bankrupt and out of the game. All your assets are turned over to the player you owe, or to the Bank if you owe the Bank.
Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: Wipe the gameboard and plastic components with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.
- Storage: Store all game components in their designated compartments within the original box to prevent loss or damage. Keep the game in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Handling: Handle the metal tokens and acrylic houses/hotels with care to prevent scratches or breakage.
