1. Product Overview

The Drive Medical Anti Tippers with Casters are designed to enhance the safety of compatible wheelchairs by preventing backward tipping. This accessory provides additional stability, particularly when navigating inclines or uneven surfaces, or when the user shifts their weight.

These anti-tippers are specifically engineered for use with Drive Medical 12" and 14" Viper, Winnie II, Infinity, Cirrus IV "ADJ Arm" Series wheelchairs, and the Super Hemi Kit (Item #STDSSHK). They feature a black finish and are designed for easy installation.

  • Verify compatibility with your specific Drive Medical wheelchair model (12" and 14" Viper, Winnie II, Infinity, Cirrus IV "ADJ Arm" Series, or Super Hemi Kit). Use with incompatible models may result in instability or damage.
  • Regularly inspect the anti-tippers for any signs of wear, damage, or loose components. Do not use if damaged.

4. Setup and Installation

Installation of the Drive Medical Anti Tippers is designed to be straightforward. Please follow these steps carefully to ensure proper and secure attachment:

  1. Identify Attachment Points: Locate the designated attachment points on the rear frame of your compatible Drive Medical wheelchair. These are typically vertical tubes near the rear wheels.
  2. Align Anti-Tippers: Take one anti-tipper and align its insertion end with the attachment point on one side of the wheelchair frame.
  3. Insert and Secure: Gently push the anti-tipper into the frame tube until the locking pin or mechanism engages. You should hear or feel a click, indicating it is securely in place.
  4. Repeat for Other Side: Repeat the process for the second anti-tipper on the opposite side of the wheelchair.
  5. Verify Security: After installation, gently pull on each anti-tipper to ensure it is firmly attached and does not wobble. If there is any looseness, re-engage the locking mechanism.

Note: Some wheelchair models may require minor adjustments or removal of existing components (e.g., rubber stoppers) to facilitate proper fit. Refer to your wheelchair's specific manual for detailed frame information. Ensure the anti-tippers are fully inserted and locked to prevent accidental detachment.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the anti-tippers operate passively to provide an additional point of contact with the ground if the wheelchair begins to tip backward. The small casters on the anti-tippers allow for continued mobility while offering a safety buffer.

  • The anti-tippers are always engaged when installed, providing continuous protection against backward tipping.
  • When ascending an incline, the anti-tippers will make contact with the ground if the wheelchair's center of gravity shifts too far backward, preventing a tip.
  • The casters allow the wheelchair to be pushed backward even when the anti-tippers are in contact with the ground, maintaining maneuverability.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and continued effectiveness of your anti-tippers, regular maintenance is recommended:

  • Cleaning: Wipe down the anti-tippers with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish or materials.
  • Inspection: Periodically check the casters for debris (hair, lint, etc.) that may impede their rotation. Clean as necessary.
  • Component Check: Ensure all pins, bolts, and connections remain tight and secure. If any part appears loose or damaged, discontinue use and contact customer support for assistance.
