2. Safety Information

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD. Disconnect power before servicing. Replace all covers before operation. Power source must agree with nameplate.

Connect ground wire to green grounding screw before operating motor.

NOTICE: This motor type is NOT ALLOWED for sale or installation for all residential and commercial pool pump applications in the State of California. Refer to CA Title 20 Section 1605.3(g).

  • Always ensure the power supply is disconnected at the circuit breaker before attempting any installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting.
  • Installation should be performed by a qualified professional if you are not experienced with electrical wiring and pump systems.
  • Keep hands and tools clear of moving parts during operation.
  • Do not operate the motor if it is damaged or if any covers are removed.

3. Product Features

  • High-quality, super efficient replacement motor
  • Corrosion-resistant outer shell
  • Round flange design. RPM = 3450
  • Easy wiring access

4. Setup and Installation

Pre-Installation Check

  • Verify the new motor's frame (FR) matches the old motor's frame (e.g., 56J).
  • Confirm horsepower (HP) and service factor (SF) are compatible with your pump's impeller. Mismatched HP/SF may require a new impeller.
  • Acquire a new seal kit for your pump, as old seals are prone to leaks.

Tools Required

  • 7/16" box end wrench
  • Channel lock wrench
  • Screwdriver (Phillips head)

Installation Steps

  1. Disconnect all power to the pump system at the circuit breaker.
  2. Carefully remove the old motor from the pump housing.
  3. Access the starter capacitor by removing its Phillips head screw. This allows access to the rear of the drive shaft.
  4. Use a 7/16" box end wrench to hold the rear of the drive shaft while using a channel lock wrench to remove the impeller from the old motor. Note: Impeller threads are standard (righty-tighty, lefty-loosey).
  5. Install the new seal kit into the pump housing.
  6. Attach the impeller to the new motor's drive shaft, ensuring it is securely tightened.
  7. Mount the new motor to the pump housing.
  8. Reconnect the starter capacitor, ensuring it is positioned correctly and secured.
  9. Connect the electrical wiring. The motor supports both 115V and 230V. Ensure the internal wiring configuration matches your power supply. Refer to the wiring diagram on the motor's nameplate.
  10. Connect the ground wire to the green grounding screw.
  11. Replace all covers before restoring power.

5. Operating Instructions

Voltage Selection

The motor is designed to operate on either 115V or 230V. Verify the internal wiring matches your power supply voltage before initial startup. Incorrect voltage can damage the motor. The motor's nameplate provides a wiring diagram for both voltage configurations.

Initial Startup

After installation, ensure all connections are secure and the pump is primed according to your pump manufacturer's instructions. Restore power and observe the motor's operation. The motor should run quietly and smoothly.

Quiet Operation

This motor is designed for quiet operation. Any unusual loud noises, vibrations, or excessive heat should be investigated immediately.

6. Maintenance

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the motor for any signs of wear, corrosion, or damage.
  • Clear Vents: Ensure the motor's ventilation openings are clear of debris, dust, and obstructions to prevent overheating.
  • Seal Integrity: Monitor for any water leaks around the pump housing, which may indicate a failing seal. Replace seal kits as needed to prevent water ingress into the motor.
  • Wiring Check: Occasionally check electrical connections for tightness and signs of corrosion. Ensure all grounding connections remain secure.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Motor Not Starting:
    • Check power supply at the circuit breaker.
    • Verify correct voltage selection (115V/230V) and wiring according to the nameplate diagram.
    • Inspect for any obstructions preventing the motor from turning.
  • Loud Noise/Screaming:
    • This can indicate bearing failure or issues with the winding/brush assembly. Discontinue use and consult a qualified technician.
    • Check for foreign objects in the pump impeller that may be causing noise.
  • Overheating:
    • Ensure motor vents are clear of debris.
    • Verify correct voltage and amperage draw.
    • Check for excessive load on the motor (e.g., clogged pump, restricted water flow).
  • Water Leaks:
    • Inspect pump seals and O-rings. Replace the seal kit if leaks are detected.
