4.1 Hardware Installation
- Attach Antennas: Carefully screw the two detachable antennas onto the connectors at the rear of the DAP-1360.
- Positioning: Place the DAP-1360 in a central location within your desired wireless coverage area, away from obstructions and sources of interference (e.g., microwave ovens, cordless phones).
- Connect to Network: Connect one end of the provided Ethernet cable to the LAN port on the DAP-1360 and the other end to an available LAN port on your router or network switch.
- Power On: Connect the power adapter to the 12VDC IN port on the DAP-1360 and plug the adapter into a power outlet. Press the ON/OFF switch to power on the device.
- Verify LEDs: Observe the front panel LEDs. The Power LED should be solid green. The LAN LED should illuminate if connected to an active network device. The Wireless LED will blink during wireless activity.
4.2 Initial Configuration (Access Point Mode Example)
The DAP-1360 supports multiple operating modes. This section outlines a basic setup for Access Point mode.
- Connect to the DAP-1360:
- Wired Connection: Connect your computer directly to the DAP-1360's LAN port using an Ethernet cable. Ensure your computer's IP settings are set to obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP).
- Wireless Connection: Search for the default wireless network name (SSID) broadcast by the DAP-1360 (usually "dlink" or similar, check the device label for specifics) and connect to it. There might be no password initially, or a default one provided on the label.
- Access Web Interface: Open a web browser and enter the default IP address of the DAP-1360 (e.g., http://192.168.0.50 or http://dlinkap). Refer to the Quick Installation Guide or device label for the exact default IP.
- Login: Enter the default username (usually "admin") and leave the password field blank (or use "admin" if prompted).
- Run Setup Wizard: Follow the on-screen instructions of the setup wizard to configure your device. This typically involves:
- Changing the administrator password for security.
- Selecting the operating mode (e.g., Access Point).
- Configuring wireless settings (SSID, security type, password).
- Setting the device's IP address (if necessary, to avoid conflicts with your main router).
- Save Settings and Reboot: After completing the wizard, save your settings and allow the device to reboot.
5. Operating Modes
The D-Link DAP-1360 offers multiple operating modes to suit various networking needs:

Figure 3: Visual representation of the D-Link DAP-1360's operational modes, including Access Point, Wireless Client, Bridge, and Bridge with AP.
- Access Point (AP) Mode: The default mode, allowing wireless clients to connect to a wired network. It broadcasts a wireless signal, enabling devices like laptops and smartphones to access the internet or local network.
- Wireless Client Mode: Connects a wired device (e.g., a gaming console, desktop PC) to a wireless network. The DAP-1360 acts as a wireless adapter for the wired device.
- Wireless Repeater Mode: Extends the range of an existing wireless network by repeating the signal. This helps eliminate wireless dead zones.
- Wireless Bridge Mode: Connects two wired networks wirelessly. This is useful for connecting two segments of a network without running long Ethernet cables.
- Wireless Bridge with AP Mode: Combines the functionality of Wireless Bridge and Access Point modes. It connects two wired networks wirelessly while also providing a wireless access point for clients.
Detailed configuration steps for each mode are available in the device's web-based management interface.
6. Maintenance
- Firmware Updates: Regularly check the D-Link support website for the latest firmware updates. Updating the firmware can improve performance, add new features, and fix security vulnerabilities.
- Regular Cleaning: Keep the device clean and free from dust. Ensure ventilation holes are not obstructed to prevent overheating.
- Power Cycle: If the device experiences intermittent issues, try power cycling it (turn off, wait 10 seconds, then turn on).
- Backup Configuration: It is recommended to back up your device's configuration settings through the web interface before performing major changes or firmware updates.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 No Power
- Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to the DAP-1360 and a working power outlet.
- Verify the ON/OFF switch on the rear panel is in the 'ON' position.
- Check if the power outlet is functional by plugging in another device.
7.2 Cannot Access Web-based Management Interface
- Ensure your computer is connected to the DAP-1360 via Ethernet or its wireless network.
- Verify your computer's IP settings are set to obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP).
- Confirm you are using the correct default IP address (e.g., http://192.168.0.50) or hostname (http://dlinkap).
- Try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or use a different browser.
- If you have changed the device's IP address, use the new IP address.
- If you forgot the password, perform a factory reset by pressing and holding the Reset button for 10 seconds while the device is powered on. Note: This will erase all custom settings.
7.3 No Internet Connection
- In Access Point mode, ensure the DAP-1360 is correctly connected to a router or modem with an active internet connection.
- Check the status of your main router/modem.
- Verify the DAP-1360's configuration settings, especially if it's in Repeater or Client mode, to ensure it's correctly connected to the upstream wireless network.
