4. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for safe and effective grilling.

  1. Prepare Charcoal: Place charcoal briquettes or lump charcoal onto the elevated fire grate. Do not overfill.
  2. Light Charcoal: Use a charcoal chimney starter or approved fire starters to ignite the charcoal. Allow charcoal to ash over before spreading evenly.
  3. Adjust Cooking Grid: The nickel-plated cooking grid features a 3-position tilt mechanism. Use the stay-cool knobs to adjust the grid height, allowing you to grill items at different temperatures simultaneously (e.g., rare and well-done).
  4. Control Temperature: The grill hood and bowl are equipped with adjustable air vents. Open the vents to increase airflow and temperature, and close them to reduce airflow and temperature. Experiment to find the optimal settings for your cooking needs.
  5. Place Food: Once the grill reaches the desired temperature, place food on the cooking grid.
  6. Monitor Cooking: Keep the hood closed as much as possible to maintain consistent temperature and smoke flavor. Use the side tables for holding utensils and condiments.
  7. Ash Management: The elevated fire grate with ash dump design helps prevent bottom burnouts and simplifies ash removal.

5. Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your grill.

  • Cleaning the Cooking Grid: After each use, once the grill has cooled, scrape off any food residue from the cooking grid using a grill brush. The grid can be washed with warm, soapy water and thoroughly rinsed.
  • Ash Disposal: After the charcoal has completely cooled (allow several hours), remove the ash dump and dispose of ashes safely as described in the safety section. Clean the ash dump regularly.
  • Exterior Cleaning: Wipe down the exterior surfaces of the grill with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.
  • Wooden Components: The wooden side tables and bottom shelf may benefit from occasional treatment with a food-safe wood oil to maintain their appearance and protect them from weather elements.
  • Storage: Store the grill in a dry, covered area when not in use to protect it from weather. The fold-away side tables allow for more compact storage.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your grill, consider the following common solutions:

  • Difficulty Lighting Charcoal: Ensure charcoal is dry. Use sufficient fire starter or a chimney starter. Check for adequate airflow to the charcoal.
  • Uneven Cooking: Ensure charcoal is spread evenly across the fire grate. Adjust the cooking grid height to manage heat intensity for different areas.
  • Temperature Too High/Low: Adjust the air vents on the hood and bowl. More open vents increase temperature, more closed vents decrease it. Ensure the hood is closed to retain heat.
  • Grill Wobbles: Check all assembly bolts and nuts to ensure they are securely tightened. Ensure the grill is on a level surface.
