Key Features
- Charge Wizard 4-Stage Charging System: Built-in system designed to dramatically increase battery life.
- Battery Protection: This converter/charger prevents battery overcharging, ensuring batteries are not boiled.
- Intelligent Battery Management: Provides an intelligent method to charge and maintain your RV battery.
- Ease of Installation: Designed for straightforward installation.
- Broad Compatibility: Replaces various converter sections from Parallax/Magnatek and WFCO models.
Setup and Installation
The PD4655V is designed for easy installation, typically taking between 30 minutes to an hour for individuals with basic electrical wiring experience. Clear instructions and diagrams are provided to guide the process.
Before You Begin:
- Safety First: Always disconnect all power to your RV's electrical system. This includes turning off shore power and unhooking your battery.
- Tools Required: You will need standard Phillips and straight blade screwdrivers. An Allen wrench is also necessary for tightening the heavy-duty connections to the battery and the converter.
- Operating Environment: Ensure the installation area is within the recommended operating temperature range of 0-50°C.
- Input Voltage: The unit operates with an input voltage frequency of 50-60 Hz.
Installation Steps:
- Disconnect all power sources to your RV.
- Carefully remove the existing converter/charger unit from its housing. Note the wiring connections.
- Connect the AC side wires from the new PD4655V unit to the appropriate terminals, following the provided diagrams.
- Connect the DC side wires, including the heavier battery and converter cables, ensuring secure connections with an Allen wrench.
- Secure the new converter/charger unit in place.
- Reconnect your RV battery and shore power.
Note on DC Distribution Board:
The PD4655V may include a replacement DC distribution board. Be aware that this board has specific limitations:
- Maximum individual circuit load of 20A.
- Two of the 12 branches have a 5A maximum limit.
If your RV has circuits exceeding these limits (e.g., a 30A slide-out circuit), you may need to reconfigure your circuits or opt to retain your original DC distribution board. The converter/charger will function properly without replacing the DC board, though you may not have the integrated Charge Wizard monitoring LEDs on the board itself.
Operating Instructions
The Inteli-Power 4600 Series Converter/Charger features the advanced Charge Wizard, an intelligent 4-stage charging system designed to optimize battery charging and extend battery life. The system automatically cycles through different modes based on battery condition.
Charge Wizard Modes:
- Boost Mode (14.5V): Provides a rapid charge to quickly bring a depleted battery up to full capacity. This mode also includes an automatic desulfation boost every 21 hours to prevent sulfation buildup.
- Normal Mode (13.7V): The standard charging voltage for maintaining a fully charged battery and powering 12V appliances.
- Storage Mode (13.3V): A lower voltage float charge to maintain batteries during periods of inactivity, preventing overcharging and fluid loss.
The unit automatically transitions between these modes. If you are charging your battery bank from a generator, you can manually activate the Boost mode to achieve the fastest possible charge rate.
An LED indicator on the circuit board provides visual feedback on the current charging mode of the unit.
Maintenance
The Progressive Dynamics PD4655V is designed for low maintenance, primarily focusing on battery health due to its intelligent charging system.
- Battery Fluid Levels: The Charge Wizard's precise charging prevents overcharging, which can lead to battery fluid boil-off. This results in more stable fluid levels and reduces the frequency of needing to check and refill battery water (for lead-acid batteries).
- Desulfation: The automatic desulfation boost helps to prevent the buildup of lead sulfate crystals on battery plates, which is a common cause of battery degradation. This feature contributes significantly to extending the overall lifespan of your RV batteries.
- Cleanliness: Periodically inspect the unit and its connections for dust or debris. Ensure proper airflow around the unit for optimal cooling.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your PD4655V converter/charger, consider the following:
- No Power/Charging: Verify all AC and DC connections are secure. Check circuit breakers and fuses in your RV's power distribution panel. Ensure shore power is connected and active.
- Unusual Odors: If you detect any burning smell or unusual odors from the unit, immediately disconnect all power (shore power and battery) to prevent further damage or safety hazards.
- Battery Not Charging Optimally: Confirm that your battery terminals are clean and tight. Ensure the battery itself is in good condition. The Charge Wizard should automatically adjust, but severe battery issues may require professional assessment.
- Breaker Issues: The use of low-quality or improperly rated inline breakers can lead to converter malfunction or failure. Ensure any inline breakers are of high quality and correctly rated for the 55 Amp output of this unit.
