Diamond HV5S Multi-Band Mobile Antenna User Manual

Model: HV5S

Brand: Diamond

1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Diamond HV5S Multi-Band Mobile Antenna. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the antenna to ensure optimal performance and safety.

The Diamond HV5S is a versatile multi-band mobile antenna designed for amateur radio use, offering coverage across multiple frequency bands. Its robust construction ensures reliable performance in various mobile environments.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the equipment:

  • Do not install the antenna near power lines or other electrical hazards.
  • Ensure proper grounding of the antenna system to prevent static discharge and lightning damage.
  • Avoid touching the antenna elements during transmission, as high RF power can cause burns.
  • Use appropriate mounting hardware and ensure the antenna is securely fastened to prevent it from falling during vehicle movement.
  • Always disconnect the radio from the antenna before performing any maintenance or installation.

3. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance of your HV5S antenna. Follow these steps carefully:

3.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully unpack all components and inspect them for any signs of damage. The package should include the antenna main body, radiating elements, and mounting hardware.

3.2 Antenna Assembly

Assemble the antenna elements according to the diagram. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.

3.3 Mounting the Antenna

Select a suitable mounting location on your vehicle, typically a trunk lip, fender, or roof mount. The location should provide a clear path for radiation and minimize obstruction.

  1. Attach the antenna base to your chosen mount. Ensure a good electrical connection to the vehicle's chassis for proper grounding.
  2. Securely fasten the antenna using the provided hardware.
  3. Connect your coaxial cable (not included) to the MP connector at the base of the antenna.

3.4 SWR Tuning

After installation, it is essential to tune the antenna for optimal performance on your desired frequencies. Use an SWR meter to measure the Standing Wave Ratio. Adjust the length of the radiating elements as necessary to achieve an SWR of 1.5:1 or lower on the operating bands.

Refer to the specifications section for target VSWR values for each band.

4. Operating the Antenna

Once installed and tuned, the Diamond HV5S antenna is ready for operation. Connect your transceiver to the antenna via the coaxial cable.

4.1 Frequency Bands

The HV5S supports the following amateur radio bands:

  • 7 MHz (40m band)
  • 21 MHz (15m band)
  • 50 MHz (6m band)
  • 144 MHz (2m band)
  • 430 MHz (70cm band)

4.2 Power Handling

Observe the maximum power handling capabilities to prevent damage to the antenna or transceiver:

  • 120 W SSB (7/21/50 MHz)
  • 200 W SSB (144/430 MHz)

Caution: Exceeding the maximum power rating can permanently damage the antenna.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will prolong the life and ensure consistent performance of your antenna.

  • Periodically check all connections for tightness and corrosion. Clean any corroded contacts with a suitable contact cleaner.
  • Inspect the radiating elements for bends, cracks, or other physical damage.
  • Ensure the antenna mount is secure and free from rust.
  • Clean the antenna with a mild soap and water solution. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

6. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your Diamond HV5S antenna, refer to the table below for common problems and their solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
High SWRImproper tuning, poor ground, damaged coaxial cable, incorrect mounting location.Re-tune antenna, check ground connection, inspect/replace coaxial cable, relocate antenna.
Poor signal reception/transmissionHigh SWR, loose connections, damaged antenna element, interference.Address high SWR, check all connections, inspect antenna, identify and mitigate interference sources.
Antenna noiseElectrical interference from vehicle, poor grounding.Improve grounding, install noise filters, check vehicle electrical system.

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Diamond customer support.
