1. Important Safety Information
Please read these instructions carefully before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or other hazards, which could cause property damage, serious injury, or death.
- WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock. Disconnect power at the fuse or circuit breaker before installing or servicing.
- Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
- Ensure the supply voltage is correct for the fixture (120V or 277V).
- Do not install near combustible materials.
- This device is designed for outdoor, wet-rated locations.
- Use only with PAR38 flood lamps up to 150W max.
2. Product Overview
The RAB Lighting GT500W is a hardwired outdoor motion sensor designed to provide reliable security lighting. It features a 110-degree detection range and is compatible with 120V and 277V systems, supporting up to 600W at 120V and 1350W at 277V. Its durable polycarbonate housing and 6000V surge protection ensure long-term performance in various weather conditions.

Key Features:
- Reliable Motion Detection: 110° coverage for dependable security.
- Dual Voltage Capability: Supports 120V and 277V installations.
- Heavy-Duty Surge Protection: Built with 6000V surge protection.
- Durable Construction: Polycarbonate housing for wet-rated outdoor performance.
- Adjustable Timing: Run time from 10 seconds to 15 minutes.
- Manual Override: 6-hour protected manual override for continuous light.
- Lamp Compatibility: Designed for PAR38 flood lamps up to 150W max.
3. Installation (Setup)
Before beginning installation, ensure all power is disconnected at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This device is designed for wall mount installation.
3.1 Mounting
- Select a suitable mounting location, typically 8-15 feet above the ground, ensuring the sensor has an unobstructed view of the desired detection area.
- Securely attach the sensor to a junction box using appropriate hardware (not included). Ensure a watertight seal for outdoor applications.
3.2 Wiring
The GT500W sensor is hardwired and supports both 120V and 277V electrical systems. Refer to the wiring diagram below and consult a qualified electrician if unsure.

Figure 3.1: Wiring connections for the GT500W sensor. Black wire for Line, White for Neutral, Red for Load.
- Connect the BLACK wire from the sensor to the LINE (HOT) wire from the power supply.
- Connect the WHITE wire from the sensor to the NEUTRAL wire from the power supply.
- Connect the RED wire from the sensor to the LOAD (fixture) wire.
- Ensure all connections are secure and insulated with approved wire connectors.
- Restore power at the circuit breaker.
4. Operation
The GT500W sensor automatically detects motion and activates connected lighting. It features adjustable settings for optimal performance.
4.1 Detection Range
The sensor provides a 110-degree field of view, detecting motion up to 70 feet away. The coverage area can be influenced by mounting height and environmental factors.

Figure 4.1: The 110-degree detection range of the GT500 sensor.
4.2 Adjusting Settings
The sensor includes controls for adjusting the run time and sensitivity. These controls are typically located on the underside or side of the sensor unit.

Figure 4.2: Example of adjustable sensitivity control.
- TIME Adjustment: This dial controls how long the light remains on after motion is detected. Settings typically range from 10 seconds to 15 minutes. Turn the dial clockwise to increase the duration, counter-clockwise to decrease.
- SENSITIVITY Adjustment: This dial controls the sensor's responsiveness to motion. Turn the dial clockwise for higher sensitivity (detects smaller movements or at greater distances), and counter-clockwise for lower sensitivity (reduces false triggers).
4.3 Manual Override
The GT500W features a 6-hour protected manual override function, allowing the light to stay on continuously regardless of motion detection.
- To activate manual override, quickly turn the light switch OFF and then ON within 2 seconds. The light will remain ON for approximately 6 hours.
- To deactivate manual override and return to motion-sensing mode, quickly turn the light switch OFF and then ON again. The light will then operate based on motion detection and set time.
5. Maintenance
The RAB Lighting GT500W motion sensor is designed for minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the sensor lens with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, or debris that may obstruct detection. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Lamp Replacement: If the connected PAR38 flood lamps fail, ensure power is disconnected before replacing them. Follow the lamp manufacturer's instructions for replacement.
6. Troubleshooting
If the motion sensor light is not functioning as expected, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Light does not turn on when motion is detected. | No power to the sensor. Sensor sensitivity too low. Bulb(s) faulty. Sensor lens obstructed. | Check circuit breaker/fuse. Increase sensitivity setting. Replace bulb(s). Clean sensor lens. |
| Light stays on continuously. | Manual override activated. Constant motion in detection zone. Sensor faulty. | Deactivate manual override (OFF-ON-OFF-ON switch sequence). Adjust sensor angle or sensitivity. Contact customer support. |
| Light turns on for no apparent reason (false triggers). | Sensor sensitivity too high. Heat sources (e.g., exhaust vents, reflective surfaces). Small animals or moving foliage. | Decrease sensitivity setting. Adjust sensor angle to avoid heat sources. Adjust sensor angle or reduce sensitivity. |
| Light turns off too quickly or too slowly. | Time adjustment setting incorrect. | Adjust the TIME dial to the desired duration. |
