3. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your APC Smart-UPS SMT750 for optimal performance.

  1. Unpack the UPS: Carefully remove the UPS and all accessories from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
  2. Connect the Battery: The UPS is shipped with the battery disconnected for safety. Locate the battery connector on the rear panel. Remove the protective cap from the battery connector. Connect the battery cable to the battery connector. Ensure a secure connection.
  3. Connect Equipment to UPS Outlets: Plug your critical electronic devices (computers, monitors, network equipment) into the 'Battery Backup + Surge' outlets. For devices that only require surge protection (e.g., printers, scanners), use the 'Surge Only' outlets.
  4. Connect to Utility Power: Plug the UPS power cord into a grounded 120V AC wall outlet.
  5. Initial Charge: Allow the UPS to charge for at least 24 hours before initial use to ensure maximum runtime capacity. The LCD display will indicate the battery charge level.
  6. Turn On the UPS: Press the power button on the front panel to turn on the UPS. The LCD display will illuminate, showing the current status.

4. Operating Instructions

Once set up, your APC Smart-UPS SMT750 operates largely automatically. The LCD display provides crucial information and allows for basic configuration.

  • Normal Operation: When utility power is present, the UPS charges its battery and provides surge-protected power to connected devices. The LCD will show 'On Line' status.
  • Battery Operation: During a power outage, the UPS automatically switches to battery power, providing uninterrupted power to connected devices. An audible alarm may sound, and the LCD will indicate 'On Battery' status and estimated runtime.
  • LCD Display: Use the display buttons to cycle through various information screens, including input/output voltage, load percentage, battery charge level, and estimated runtime.
  • Network Management: For advanced monitoring and management, connect the UPS to your network via the USB or serial port, or an optional Ethernet card. Install the PowerChute software (available from APC) on your computer for detailed control and graceful shutdown capabilities.
  • Overload Protection: If the UPS is overloaded, it will sound an alarm and may shut down. Reduce the load by unplugging non-essential devices and press the 'Overload Protector' button on the rear panel to reset.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of your UPS.

  • Battery Replacement: The internal 12V lead-acid battery has a finite lifespan. When the battery needs replacement, the UPS will indicate this on the LCD. Refer to the APC website or contact support for compatible replacement battery cartridges (RBCs). Battery replacement is typically user-serviceable.
  • Cleaning: Keep the UPS clean and free of dust. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the exterior. Ensure ventilation openings are not obstructed.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the UPS within recommended temperature and humidity ranges to maximize battery life and overall performance.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your UPS.

  • UPS Not Turning On: Ensure the battery is properly connected and the UPS is plugged into a live wall outlet. Check the circuit breaker on the rear panel.
  • Short Runtime: The battery may not be fully charged, or it may be nearing the end of its service life. Allow for a full 24-hour charge or consider battery replacement.
  • Constant Beeping: This usually indicates the UPS is operating on battery power due to a utility power outage or a low battery condition. Check your utility power.
  • Overload Indication: If the UPS displays an overload warning, disconnect non-essential equipment from the battery backup outlets and press the overload protector reset button.
  • No Power to Outlets: Verify the UPS is turned on and receiving utility power. Check if the outlets are 'Battery Backup + Surge' or 'Surge Only'.
