Leviton ML1-P MiniLock 15 Amp 125 Volt Non-Grounding Locking Plug Instruction Manual
1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of the Leviton ML1-P MiniLock 15 Amp, 125 Volt, Non-Grounding Locking Plug. This industrial-grade plug is designed for reliable performance in various applications requiring a secure, non-grounding connection.
2. Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent personal injury or damage to the product and connected equipment:
- DANGER: Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installing or servicing. Failure to do so may result in severe injury or death.
- This device is for 125 Volt, 15 Amp, 2-pole, non-grounding applications only. Do not use with higher voltage or amperage circuits, or where grounding is required.
- Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated.
- Do not use if the plug or cord is damaged.
- Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about any part of these instructions.
- Adhere to all local and national electrical codes.
3. Installation Instructions
3.1 Tools Required
- Screwdriver (Phillips and/or Flathead, appropriate size for terminal screws)
- Wire Strippers
- Utility Knife (for outer jacket)
3.2 Wiring the Plug
Follow these steps to properly wire the Leviton ML1-P locking plug to your electrical cord:
- Prepare the Cord: Carefully strip the outer jacket of your electrical cord (suitable for 18 to 14 AWG wires, 0.218 to 0.43 inch diameter) to expose approximately 1.5 inches of the insulated inner wires.
- Strip Inner Wires: Strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the two inner wires (typically black for hot, white for neutral).
- Disassemble the Plug: Unscrew the housing of the ML1-P plug to separate the front and back sections. Loosen the terminal screws on the plug body.
- Connect Wires:
- Connect the black (hot) wire to the brass-colored terminal screw.
- Connect the white (neutral) wire to the silver-colored terminal screw.
- Secure Cord Grip: Position the cord grip around the outer jacket of the cord and tighten the screws to secure the cord firmly within the plug housing. This prevents strain on the terminal connections.
- Reassemble the Plug: Carefully align the front and back sections of the plug housing and screw them together until snug. Do not overtighten.

4. Operation
To operate the Leviton ML1-P locking plug:
- Ensure the plug is correctly wired to your electrical cord as per the installation instructions.
- Align the blades of the ML1-P plug with the corresponding slots of a compatible 125 Volt, 15 Amp, 2-pole, non-grounding locking receptacle.
- Insert the plug fully into the receptacle.
- Twist the plug clockwise until it locks into place. This action secures the connection and prevents accidental disconnection.
- To disconnect, twist the plug counter-clockwise to unlock, then pull straight out from the receptacle.
5. Maintenance
The Leviton ML1-P plug is designed for durability and requires minimal maintenance. However, regular inspection can extend its lifespan and ensure safe operation:
- Periodic Inspection: Regularly check the plug and the connected cord for any signs of damage, such as cracks, fraying, discoloration, or loose connections.
- Cleaning: If necessary, clean the exterior of the plug with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents. Ensure the plug is disconnected from power before cleaning.
- Tighten Screws: Periodically check and tighten the cord grip and terminal screws if they appear loose. Ensure power is disconnected before tightening terminal screws.
- Storage: Store the plug in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Leviton ML1-P locking plug, refer to the following table:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
