1. Setup
1.1 Unpacking
Verify that all items are present in the package:

1.2 Battery Installation and Charging
The camera uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.
- Open the battery cover located on the bottom of the camera.
- Insert the battery pack with the contacts facing the correct direction, as indicated inside the compartment.
- Close the battery cover securely.
- Connect the battery charger to a power outlet and insert the battery. The charging indicator will illuminate.
- Once charging is complete (indicator turns off), remove the battery from the charger.

1.3 Memory Card Insertion
The camera supports SD/SDHC memory cards (not included). A Class 6 or higher SD card is recommended for HD video recording.
- Open the memory card slot cover, usually located near the battery compartment.
- Insert the SD/SDHC card into the slot with the label facing the front of the camera until it clicks into place.
- Close the memory card slot cover securely.
1.4 Initial Setup
Upon first power-on, you may be prompted to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen instructions using the camera's control buttons.
2. Operating the Camera
2.1 Turning the Camera On/Off
Press the POWER button to turn the camera on or off. The lens will extend when powered on.
2.2 Basic Photography Modes
Rotate the mode dial to select your desired shooting mode:
- Smart AUTO (green camera icon): The camera automatically detects the scene and applies optimal settings from 22 predefined shooting situations. This is recommended for beginners.
- Program AE (P): Allows more control over settings like ISO, white balance, and metering, while the camera sets aperture and shutter speed.
- Scene Modes (SCN): Offers various scene-specific presets like Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, etc.
- Movie Mode (red camera icon): For recording video.
2.3 Taking Photos
- Turn the mode dial to a photography mode (e.g., Smart AUTO).
- Frame your shot using the 2.7-inch LCD screen.
- Use the zoom lever to adjust the optical zoom (4x).
- Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The focus frame will turn green when focus is achieved.
- Press the shutter button fully down to take the picture.

2.4 Recording Videos
The PowerShot SD940IS can record 720p HD movies.
- Rotate the mode dial to the Movie Mode icon.
- Press the movie button (often a dedicated red button) to start recording.
- Press the movie button again to stop recording.
- Note: Optical zoom is not available during video recording; digital zoom can be used up to 4x.
2.5 Playback Mode
Press the PLAYBACK button to review your photos and videos.
- Use the directional buttons to navigate through images.
- Press the FUNC./SET button to play videos.
- Use the zoom lever to zoom in on photos or view multiple images at once.
2.6 Connecting to a Computer or TV
You can view your images and videos on a computer or HDTV.
- Computer: Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The camera will appear as a removable drive, allowing you to transfer files. Install the Canon Digital Camera Solution software for advanced features.
- HDTV: Use an HDMI cable (Type C Mini HDMI, not included) to connect the camera to an HDTV for high-definition playback.
3. Maintenance
