1. Introduction
The Palmer PGA04 is a specialized Direct Injection (DI) box designed for guitar applications, featuring an integrated loadbox and speaker simulation capabilities. It allows tube amplifiers with an output of up to 120 Watts to be connected directly without requiring a physical loudspeaker, making it ideal for silent recording or direct connection to mixing consoles. The unit provides both unbalanced jack and balanced XLR outputs, along with a comprehensive filter section to emulate various classic guitar loudspeaker sounds.

2. Key Features
- Speaker Simulator: Provides realistic emulation of guitar loudspeaker characteristics.
- Integrated Loadbox: Allows direct connection of tube amplifiers up to 120W without a speaker cabinet.
- DI Box Functionality: Offers both unbalanced (jack) and balanced (XLR) outputs for versatile signal routing.
- Extensive Filter Section: Includes controls for Volume, Voicing (Flat, Low, High, Colour), and Hi-Cut for tone shaping.
- Robust Construction: Designed and manufactured in Germany for durability and reliability.
3. Setup and Connections
Before connecting the PGA04, ensure all audio equipment is powered off. Refer to Figure 2 for a visual guide to the rear panel connections.
- Amplifier Connection: Connect the speaker output of your tube amplifier (up to 120W) to the INPUT jack of the PGA04's LOADBOX section using a high-quality speaker cable. Ensure the amplifier's impedance matches the PGA04's 8 Ohm load.
- Speaker Thru (Optional): If you wish to use a physical speaker cabinet in conjunction with the loadbox, connect it to the THRU jack in the LOADBOX section. This allows the signal to pass through to the speaker while still providing a direct output from the PGA04.
- Unbalanced Output: For connecting to guitar effects pedals, instrument inputs, or unbalanced mixer inputs, use the UNBALANCED jack output.
- Balanced Output: For professional connections to mixing consoles, audio interfaces, or PA systems, use the BALANCED XLR output. This output provides a low-impedance, balanced signal, reducing noise over long cable runs.
- Ground Lift: If you experience hum or ground loop noise, activate the GND LIFT switch next to the balanced XLR output.

4. Operating Instructions
Once connected, you can power on your amplifier and the connected receiving device (mixer, interface, etc.). Adjust the controls on the front panel to shape your desired tone.
- VOLUME: Controls the overall output level of the simulated signal. Start with this control at a low setting and gradually increase it to avoid sudden loud signals.
- VOICING (FILTER): This section allows for detailed tonal shaping, simulating different speaker characteristics.
- FLAT: Provides a neutral, uncolored response.
- LOW: Adjusts the low-frequency response.
- HIGH: Adjusts the high-frequency response.
- COLOUR: Adds a specific tonal character, often associated with classic guitar speakers.
- HI-CUT: This switch allows you to select between an 'OFF' position (no high-cut) and a '6kHz' position, which applies a high-frequency roll-off at 6 kHz. This can be useful for taming harsh high frequencies or simulating older speaker cabinets.
- INPUT POWER Indicators: A series of LEDs (3W, 10W, 30W, 60W, 120W) indicate the approximate power level being delivered by the connected amplifier to the loadbox. Ensure your amplifier's output does not consistently exceed the 120W rating of the PGA04.
5. Maintenance
The Palmer PGA04 is designed for robust performance and requires minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure its longevity:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Environment: Operate and store the unit in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and excessive dust.
- Ventilation: Ensure the ventilation slots on the unit are not obstructed to prevent overheating, especially when using the loadbox function with high-wattage amplifiers.
- Cable Connections: Periodically check all cable connections for secure fit and signs of wear.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound output. | Incorrect connections, low volume setting, amplifier not powered on. | Verify all cables are correctly connected (refer to Section 3). Increase the VOLUME control on the PGA04. Ensure your amplifier is powered on and functioning. |
| Hum or buzzing noise. | Ground loop, faulty cable. | Engage the GND LIFT switch on the rear panel. Try different cables. Ensure all equipment is on the same power circuit. |
| Distorted or poor sound quality. | Input signal too hot, incorrect filter settings. | Reduce the output volume from your amplifier. Adjust the VOICING and HI-CUT controls to find a suitable tone. Ensure amplifier impedance matches PGA04 (8 Ohms). |
| Unit feels hot. | Normal operation under load, obstructed ventilation. | The unit may become warm during normal operation, especially when using the loadbox. Ensure ventilation slots are clear and the unit has adequate airflow. If excessively hot, reduce amplifier power or discontinue use. |
