NZXT Sentry 2 Touch Screen Meter User Manual

Model: SEN2-001 | Brand: NZXT

1. Introduction

The NZXT Sentry 2 is an advanced full system fan controller designed for PC enthusiasts. It features an intuitive touch screen interface, allowing precise control over up to five system fans. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance of your Sentry 2 fan controller.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing or operating the Sentry 2. Failure to do so may result in damage to the device, your computer, or personal injury.

  • Ensure your computer system is powered off and unplugged from the wall outlet before installation.
  • Handle all components with care to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Consider using an anti-static wrist strap.
  • Do not expose the device to moisture or extreme temperatures.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the Sentry 2. This will void the warranty.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in the package:

  • NZXT Sentry 2 Touch Screen Fan Controller
  • Mounting Screws
  • Thermal Sensors (typically 5, plus spares)
  • User Manual (this document)

4. Setup and Installation

The Sentry 2 is designed to fit into a standard 5.25-inch drive bay in your computer case.

  1. Prepare Your System: Power off your computer and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Open your computer case.
  2. Install the Sentry 2: Locate an available 5.25-inch drive bay. Slide the Sentry 2 into the bay from the front of the case until the mounting holes align. Secure the Sentry 2 using the provided mounting screws.
  3. Connect Power: Connect a 4-pin Molex power connector from your power supply unit (PSU) to the corresponding port on the back of the Sentry 2.
  4. Connect Fans: The Sentry 2 has five fan headers. Connect your case fans to these headers. The Sentry 2 supports fans that use voltage control. Each channel supports up to 10W.
  5. Install Thermal Sensors: The Sentry 2 comes with thermal sensors. Carefully attach these sensors to areas you wish to monitor, such as CPU heatsink fins, GPU heatsink, hard drives, or specific areas within the case. Use the provided adhesive tape to secure them.
  6. Cable Management: Route all cables neatly to ensure proper airflow within your case.
  7. Close Case and Power On: Close your computer case, plug in the power cord, and power on your system.

5.2 Fan Control Modes

The Sentry 2 offers both automatic and manual control modes for your fans.

  • Manual Mode: Allows you to individually adjust the speed of each of the five connected fans. Use the touch controls on the screen to select a fan and then increase or decrease its speed.
  • Automatic Mode: The controller automatically adjusts fan speeds based on the temperature readings from the connected thermal sensors. This mode optimizes cooling performance while minimizing noise.

5.3 Temperature Monitoring and Alarms

The Sentry 2 continuously monitors temperatures. You can set a preset temperature threshold. If any monitored temperature exceeds this threshold, the Sentry 2 will sound an alarm to alert you.

  • To switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit, touch the temperature display area.
  • To set an alarm threshold, navigate to the temperature settings via the touch screen and adjust the desired maximum temperature.

5.4 Stored Settings

The Sentry 2 retains your customized settings even after the system is powered off, ensuring your preferred fan profiles are always active upon startup.

6. Maintenance

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your Sentry 2:

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the touch screen with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Dust Removal: Periodically clean dust from inside your computer case to maintain good airflow and prevent overheating of components, including the Sentry 2.
  • Cable Check: Occasionally check that all fan and power cables are securely connected.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Sentry 2, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Sentry 2 display is off.No power connection or unit is off.Ensure the 4-pin Molex power connector is securely attached. Check if the unit was manually turned off (some models have a power button on the display).
Fans are not spinning or not controllable.Incorrect fan connection or incompatible fan type.Verify that fans are correctly plugged into the Sentry 2 headers. Ensure fans are voltage-controlled (not all PWM fans are fully compatible with voltage control). Check fan power draw (max 10W per channel).
Temperature readings are inaccurate or missing.Thermal sensor not properly placed or disconnected.Check that thermal sensors are securely attached to the desired monitoring points and are plugged into the Sentry 2. Ensure good contact with the surface being measured.
Alarm sounds frequently.Temperature threshold set too low or actual overheating.Adjust the alarm temperature threshold to a higher value if it's a false alarm. If temperatures are genuinely high, improve case airflow or clean dust from components.
