Setup and Installation

This section provides instructions for properly wiring the Leviton 8215-PLC plug to a power cord. Ensure the power cord is appropriate for the intended application and current rating.

Tools Required:

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Utility knife (optional, for outer jacket)

Wiring Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cord: Carefully strip the outer jacket of your power cord to expose approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of the insulated wires (typically black, white, and green/bare copper). Then, strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the black (hot), white (neutral), and green/bare copper (ground) wires.
  2. Disassemble the Plug: Unscrew the assembly screws on the plug body to separate the front and back sections. Slide the back cover and cord clamp components onto the power cord in the correct orientation.
  3. Connect the Wires: The Leviton 8215-PLC features internal wiring chambers designed to isolate individual conductors. Connect the wires to the appropriate terminals:
    • Green/Bare Copper Wire: Connect to the green (grounding) screw terminal.
    • White Wire: Connect to the silver (neutral) screw terminal.
    • Black Wire: Connect to the brass (hot) screw terminal.
Ensure all wire strands are securely under the screw heads and tightened firmly. Trim any excess wire strands to prevent short circuits.
  4. Secure the Cord Clamp: Position the cord clamp around the power cord and tighten the screws to provide a secure grip without damaging the cord's outer jacket. This prevents strain on the wire connections.
  5. Reassemble the Plug: Carefully align the front and back sections of the plug, ensuring no wires are pinched. Securely fasten the assembly screws.

Operating Instructions

Once properly wired, the Leviton 8215-PLC plug is ready for use.

  1. Connect to Power: Insert the plug firmly into a compatible 125V, 15A NEMA 5-15R receptacle.
  2. Verify Power Indication: The long-life LED bulb on the transparent body of the plug will illuminate green when power is present at the device. This provides a quick visual confirmation that the circuit is live and the plug is receiving power.
  3. Disconnecting: To disconnect, grasp the plug body firmly and pull it straight out from the receptacle. Do not pull by the cord.

Maintenance

Regular inspection and basic maintenance can help ensure the longevity and safe operation of your Leviton 8215-PLC plug.

  • Periodic Inspection: Regularly check the plug and cord for any signs of damage, such as cracks, frayed insulation, bent blades, or discoloration. If any damage is observed, discontinue use and replace the plug or cord as necessary.
  • Cleaning: Disconnect the plug from the power source before cleaning. Wipe the exterior of the plug with a dry, clean cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the material or internal components.
  • Connection Check: If the plug is frequently moved or subjected to stress, periodically check the tightness of the assembly screws and cord clamp screws to ensure secure connections.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Leviton 8215-PLC plug, refer to the following troubleshooting steps:

  • LED Indicator Not Lit:
    • Ensure the plug is fully inserted into a live receptacle.
    • Check the circuit breaker or fuse for the outlet to ensure power is supplied.
    • Verify the wiring connections inside the plug are secure (refer to Setup and Installation).
    • Inspect the power cord for any damage.
  • Loose Connection or Intermittent Power:
    • Disconnect power and re-open the plug to check all wire terminal screws for tightness.
    • Ensure the cord clamp is securely tightened to prevent strain on the internal connections.
  • Physical Damage: If the plug body, blades, or cord show signs of physical damage, replace the plug immediately.
