  • This product is intended for indoor use only.
  • Do not install this device if there is not at least 10 meters (30 feet) or more of wire between the electrical outlet and the electrical service panel.
  • Do not use this device with life support equipment, medical equipment, or other high-risk activities where failure of the equipment could lead to injury or death.
  • Do not connect the surge protector to another surge protector or extension cord. Plug directly into a grounded wall outlet.
  • Ensure the total current draw of connected equipment does not exceed the surge protector's maximum rating of 15 Amps.
  • This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.

Setup

Follow these steps to properly set up your APC P8GT surge protector:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the surge protector from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any visible damage.
  2. Placement: Place the surge protector on a stable, flat surface, ensuring it is away from moisture, excessive heat, and direct sunlight.
  3. Power Connection: Plug the surge protector's power cord directly into a standard, grounded 3-prong wall outlet. Do not use extension cords, adapters, or other surge protectors.
  4. Master Outlet Connection: Connect your primary electronic device (e.g., computer, television, AV receiver) to the outlet labeled "MASTER". This device will control the power to the controlled outlets.
  5. Controlled Outlets Connection: Connect peripheral devices (e.g., monitor, printer, speakers, soundbar, DVD player) that you wish to power on and off with the master device to the outlets labeled "CONTROLLED BY MASTER".
  6. Always-On Outlets Connection: Connect devices that require continuous power, even when the master device is off (e.g., modem, router, DVR, phone charger), to the outlets labeled "ALWAYS ON OUTLETS".
  7. Phone Line Protection (Optional): For phone line protection, connect your incoming phone line to the "IN" jack on the surge protector. Then, connect a phone cable from the "OUT" jack to your phone, modem, or fax machine.
  8. Sensitivity Adjustment: The P8GT features a sensitivity switch (PC/Tablet) to adjust how the master outlet detects power draw. If the controlled outlets do not turn off when the master device is off, try adjusting this switch. The 'PC' setting is generally for higher power draw devices, while 'Tablet' (or 'Netbook' on some models) is for lower power draw devices.

Operating Instructions

The APC P8GT operates automatically based on the power state of the device connected to the Master outlet, providing convenient power management and surge protection.

Power-Saving Functionality

  • When the device plugged into the "MASTER" outlet is turned on, power will be supplied to the "CONTROLLED BY MASTER" outlets.
  • When the device plugged into the "MASTER" outlet is turned off or enters a low-power standby mode, power to the "CONTROLLED BY MASTER" outlets will be cut, effectively saving energy.
  • The "ALWAYS ON OUTLETS" provide continuous power regardless of the master device's state, suitable for devices that need to remain powered.

Status Indicators

  • PROTECTION WORKING LED: This green LED indicates that the surge protection components are functioning correctly. If this light is off, the unit has absorbed a significant surge and can no longer provide protection. The surge protector should be replaced immediately.
  • BUILDING WIRING FAULT LED: This red LED indicates a wiring problem in your building's electrical system, such as an improper ground or reversed polarity. Consult a qualified electrician to correct the wiring fault.

Manual/Auto Switch

The switch labeled "MANUAL/AUTO" allows you to bypass or enable the power-saving feature:

  • AUTO: This is the default setting and enables the power-saving functionality where controlled outlets follow the power state of the master outlet.
  • MANUAL: This setting disables the power-saving functionality, providing continuous power to all controlled outlets, similar to the "ALWAYS ON" outlets. Use this if you prefer all devices to remain powered regardless of the master device's state.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and effectiveness of your surge protector:

  • Cleaning: Disconnect the surge protector from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners, as they may damage the unit or pose an electrical hazard.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the power cord and the surge protector's casing for any signs of damage, such as frayed wires, cuts, or cracks. If damage is found, discontinue use and replace the unit.
  • Surge Protection Status: Regularly check the "PROTECTION WORKING" LED. If it is off, the surge protector has absorbed a significant surge and can no longer provide protection to your equipment. Replace the unit immediately to maintain protection.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your APC P8GT, refer to the following table for common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No power to any outlets.Surge protector not plugged in or circuit breaker tripped.Ensure the surge protector is securely plugged into a grounded wall outlet. Check and reset the circuit breaker on the surge protector (if applicable) or your home's electrical panel.
No power to controlled outlets when master device is on.Master device not drawing enough power to trigger controlled outlets, or sensitivity setting is incorrect.Adjust the sensitivity switch (PC/Tablet). Ensure the master device is fully on, not in a low-power standby mode. Check master device settings for power-saving options.
Controlled outlets remain on when master device is off.Master device still drawing power in standby mode, or sensitivity setting is incorrect.Adjust the sensitivity switch (PC/Tablet). Check master device settings for network control or other features that keep it partially powered in standby. Some devices may always draw a small amount of power.
"PROTECTION WORKING" LED is off.Surge protection components are compromised. The surge protector has absorbed a significant surge and can no longer protect your equipment. Replace the unit immediately.
"BUILDING WIRING FAULT" LED is on.Building electrical wiring issue (e.g., improper ground, reversed polarity). This indicates a problem with your building's electrical wiring. Consult a qualified electrician to inspect and correct the wiring fault.
Phone line protection not working.Incorrect connection or damaged cable.Ensure phone lines are connected correctly to the "IN" and "OUT" jacks on the surge protector. Try a different phone cable.
