Getting Started

1. Battery Installation

The Nikon D300s uses an EN-EL3e rechargeable Li-ion battery. To install the battery:

  1. Open the battery chamber cover located at the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the battery with the contacts facing the correct direction, as indicated inside the chamber.
  3. Close the battery chamber cover securely.

2. Memory Card Installation

The D300s features dual memory card slots, supporting CompactFlash (CF) Type I/II and SD/SDHC memory cards. To install a memory card:

  1. Open the memory card slot cover on the side of the camera.
  2. Insert the CF card into its designated slot, ensuring correct orientation.
  3. Insert the SD/SDHC card into its designated slot, ensuring correct orientation.
  4. Close the memory card slot cover firmly.

3. Lens Attachment

Your Nikon D300s comes with an AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens. To attach the lens:

  1. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear lens cap from the lens.
  2. Align the mounting mark on the lens with the mounting mark on the camera body.
  3. Rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks into place.

Basic Operation

1. Power On/Off

To turn the camera on or off, use the power switch located around the shutter release button.

The mode dial on the top of the camera allows you to select various shooting modes:

Adjust these settings using the command dials while in appropriate shooting modes. The top LCD panel displays current settings.

4. Autofocus System

The D300s features a fast and accurate 51-point autofocus system with 4 Dynamic AF modes, including 3D Focus Tracking for precise focus.

5. Live View

Activate Live View mode with a dedicated button for convenient shooting from various angles. Handheld and Tripod Live View modes are available.

6. Flash Usage

The camera has a built-in pop-up flash. It supports Auto (i-TTL Balanced fill-flash and standard i-TTL flash) and Manual flash modes.

7. Continuous Shooting

The D300s offers continuous shooting at up to 7 frames per second (fps), or 8 fps with the optional MB-D10 grip, allowing you to capture fast-moving subjects.

8. D-Movie HD Video Recording

Record cinematic 24 fps, 720p HD movie clips. The camera features stereo microphone input and AF during video recording.

1. Picture Control

Select from 4 preset image capture preferences (Standard, Neutral, Vivid, and Monochrome) and 9 user-customizable settings to control sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation, and hue.

2. Active D-Lighting

Nikon's Active D-Lighting optimizes shadow and highlight detail in real-time. Selectable values and 5-frame ADL bracketing offer complete control.

3. In-Camera Image Editing

Utilize exclusive in-camera image editing features, including Edit move, D-Lighting, Image Overlay, Monochrome, NEF (RAW) processing, and more.

4. Dual Memory Card Slots

The camera features dual memory card slots (CF and SD) allowing for flexible storage options and file handling.

Maintenance

1. Integrated Dust Reduction System

The Dynamic Integrated Dust Reduction System uses an ultrasonic process to combat the accumulation of dust in front of the image sensor, safeguarding image quality.

2. General Care

To ensure the longevity of your camera, keep it clean and protected from dust and moisture. Use a soft, lint-free cloth for cleaning. Avoid exposing the camera to extreme temperatures or humidity.
