2. Compatibility

This replacement brush roller is designed for Oreck XL Upright Vacuum Cleaners. It will NOT fit Oreck XL21 models. Please verify your vacuum model number before proceeding with installation.

3. Package Contents

Your package should contain the following items:

  • 1 x Oreck XL Upright Brush Roller (Model 016-1152)
  • 3 x Replacement Drive Belts

4. Installation Instructions

Replacing the brush roller and drive belt requires a T20 Torx screwdriver. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Safety First: Always unplug your Oreck XL vacuum cleaner from the power outlet before performing any maintenance or installation.
  2. Access the Brush Housing: Lay the vacuum cleaner flat on its front. Locate the screws securing the bottom plate of the brush housing. There are typically five screws: two at the back and three at the front.
  3. Remove the Bottom Plate: Use a T20 Torx screwdriver to remove all five screws. Note that some screws may be deeper than others, requiring a longer driver. Carefully lift off the bottom plate.
  4. Remove Old Components: Once the bottom plate is removed, you will see the old brush roller and drive belt. Gently pull out the old brush roller. Remove the old drive belt from the motor shaft and the brush roller.
  5. Install New Drive Belt: Place one of the new drive belts around the motor shaft.
  6. Install New Brush Roller: Align the notches on the ends of the new brush roller with the corresponding slots in the vacuum's housing. Ensure the drive belt is properly seated around the brush roller.
  7. Reattach Bottom Plate: Place the bottom plate back onto the vacuum, ensuring all components are correctly aligned. Secure it with the five T20 Torx screws. Do not overtighten.
  8. Test: Plug in the vacuum cleaner and test its operation to ensure the new brush roller spins correctly.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your brush roller will extend its lifespan and maintain cleaning efficiency:

  • Hair and Debris Removal: Periodically inspect the brush roller for tangled hair, strings, or other debris. Use scissors to carefully cut away any obstructions.
  • Brush Wear: Over time, the bristles on the brush roller will wear down. Replace the brush roller when bristles appear significantly worn or when cleaning performance diminishes.
  • Belt Inspection: Check the drive belt for signs of wear, stretching, or breakage. Replace the belt immediately if any damage is observed.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues after replacing the brush roller or belt, consider the following:

  • Brush Roller Not Spinning: Ensure the drive belt is correctly installed around both the motor shaft and the brush roller. Check for any obstructions preventing the brush from rotating freely.
  • Reduced Suction/Cleaning Performance: This could indicate a worn brush roller, a loose or broken drive belt, or other issues unrelated to these components (e.g., clogged filter or bag).
  • Unusual Noises: A new brush roller or belt should operate smoothly. If you hear grinding, squealing, or other unusual noises, re-check the installation for proper alignment and ensure no foreign objects are present.
