1. Important Safeguards
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:
- Read all instructions before operating the appliance.
- To protect against electrical hazards, do not immerse the motor base in water or other liquids.
- Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
- Unplug from outlet when not in use, before putting on or taking off parts, and before cleaning.
- Avoid contact with moving parts.
- Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or after the appliance malfunctions or has been dropped or damaged in any manner.
- The use of attachments not recommended or sold by Cuisinart may cause fire, electric shock, or injury.
- Do not use outdoors.
- Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.
- Keep hands and utensils away from the moving blade while processing food to prevent the possibility of severe personal injury and/or damage to the food chopper/grinder. A scraper may be used but must be used only when the food chopper/grinder is not running.
- The blade is sharp. Handle with care.
- Always make sure the lid is securely locked in place before operating the appliance.
2. Setup and Assembly
2.1 Included Components
- Motor Base
- 4-Cup Work Bowl
- Work Bowl Lid
- SmartPower Blade (Chopping/Grinding Blade)
- Spatula
2.2 Initial Cleaning
Before first use, wash the work bowl, work bowl lid, and blade in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. The motor base can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
2.3 Assembly Instructions
- Place the motor base on a clean, dry, and level surface.
- Carefully place the SmartPower blade assembly onto the center post of the work bowl. Ensure the blade is fully seated.
- Place the work bowl onto the motor base, aligning the tabs on the bottom of the bowl with the slots on the motor base. Turn the bowl clockwise until it locks into place.
- Add ingredients to the work bowl. Do not fill above the maximum fill line.
- Place the work bowl lid onto the work bowl, aligning the tab on the lid with the handle of the work bowl. Turn the lid clockwise until it locks into place. The unit will not operate unless the bowl and lid are correctly assembled and locked.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Controls
The Cuisinart CH-4DC features a simple touchpad control panel with two buttons:
- Chop Button: Activates the sharp edge of the SmartPower blade for chopping delicate ingredients and puréeing soft foods.
- Grind Button: Activates the blunt edge of the SmartPower blade for grinding spices and harder foods.
3.2 Chopping and Grinding
- Ensure the unit is properly assembled and locked.
- Plug the unit into a standard electrical outlet.
- Add desired ingredients to the work bowl. For best results, cut larger items into 1-inch pieces.
- Press and hold the Chop button for chopping or the Grind button for grinding. Use short pulses for coarse results or hold longer for finer consistency.
- Release the button to stop processing.
- Always wait for the blade to stop completely before removing the lid.
3.3 BladeLock System
The unique BladeLock system secures the blade in place during processing and pouring. This feature enhances safety by preventing the blade from falling out when emptying the work bowl. To remove the blade after processing, gently twist and lift it from the center post.
3.4 Adding Liquids
The work bowl lid features small oil cavities. These allow for slow, steady addition of liquids like oil while the unit is running, which is ideal for emulsifying dressings or mayonnaise.
4. Maintenance and Cleaning
4.1 Cleaning
- Always unplug the unit before cleaning.
- The work bowl, work bowl lid, and SmartPower blade are dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended).
- For hand washing, use warm, soapy water. Exercise extreme caution when handling the blade as it is very sharp.
- Wipe the motor base clean with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the motor base in water.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads on any part of the chopper/grinder.
4.2 Storage
Store the assembled unit or its components in a dry, safe place. Its compact size allows for convenient storage on countertops or in cabinets.
5. Troubleshooting
- Unit does not turn on: Ensure the work bowl and lid are correctly assembled and securely locked into place. The blade must be pushed in and the lid properly locked for the unit to operate. Check that the power cord is firmly plugged into a working electrical outlet.
- Inconsistent chopping/grinding: Ensure ingredients are cut into uniform, smaller pieces (approx. 1-inch) before processing. Do not overfill the work bowl. Use short pulses to achieve desired consistency and scrape down the sides of the bowl if necessary.
- Liquid leakage: Do not fill the work bowl above the maximum fill line. Ensure the lid is securely locked.
